What happened to you just boils my blood. No one should be taken advantage of like that. Especially not a GI, deployed or not. It is still not right. Your posting about Herb's is heartwarming. They are a vendor that have just moved up to the top of my vendors list!
I was thinking that maybe a go fund me account might be a good idea. I would contribute to assist you realize your dream of taking your son out for an Ice Cream, etc. You deserve that and have more then earned that.
I am just finishing up a restoration on my 1969 Sport Satellite. I was quoted a price to do it and that is what I paid in increments, as progress was made.
I wish you a positive outcome. If you decide to do a Go fund me account. Let me know.

You guys are right, Herb's is just amazing. Before I moved to Spain, our plans were for me to daily drive the Roadrunner after shipping my Mustang and then drive it from Delaware to Detroit for storage. Well, I did what work I could and then just started getting up against a wall with time left to when I needed to be able to rely on it. After having shoddy work done at another shop I tracked Herb down and took it to him distraught. He fixed the problem, and did more to make him feel better about me letting my Wife drive it and he did it for less then the guy that did it wrong the first time. It cost less for him to do it, because he was honest about what I needed and what I didn't and he did the job right. I went from not being able to keep it running for more than a week at a time to daily driving it for two months and a cross-country trek because of him. My Wife and I had an inside joke that every time we stopped and it wasn't because of a break down we would say "Thank God for Herb!" lol. There was lots of praising Herb and no break downs at all. hahaha. I'll be honest, it was the first bit of hope I'd had in weeks of trying to get my car back talking to him. Just an amazing relief to hear him call back and ask how His car was doing... lol.

If I can get the $8K back, that's likely going to have to go to getting out of this condo mess we're in, but that'll put us in a bit better of a position. I guess I really just need to see what it looks like when I get it back. Herb is dead set against me selling it, but he'll be honest with me about prospective costs for what I want over time and he knows what I am and am not capable of doing myself. If it looks like I can realistically hold on to it for another 10 years without much getting worse from rust, then I'll likely do that. Another couple of deployments would cover quite a bit for it!

@mutt71 I appreciate the Go Fund Me suggestion and the thoughts to contribute, but I'll likely not. I'd feel like a lot of it was donated just because I'm Active Duty and I'd feel pretty guilty about it. At the end of the day, I can't imagine I'm much worse off than many others here despite the circumstances and just being able to vent about it has actually helped a lot. I imagine I'll have a different perspective when my little man sees and hears the car. He'll go nuts. :)

Here's a couple pictures of the little booger brain. "Fixing" a car and "Driving" one. lol

Hey I know how you feel. I just got ripped from a guy on another charger site. Not as bad as you but Im still very pissed. I bought a brand new Firecore distributer that never worked from day one. It was only 300.00 bucks but when I asked for my money back he said NO send it back to the manufacturer. Such a small amount compared to your loss but Im really angry so I can imagine how you must feel,,, I went back on the site and I see many guys complaining about buying this Firecore distributor and having problems with no spark, so Im not the only one,,,,sorry brother for your loss. I think when anyone gets ripped off its not the money could be 20 bucks,,,its the fact you were disseved,,,what goes around,,,,,,,,,remember

I understand your feeling this way. It was just a thought. Your son looks like he is having as much fun behind the wheel with you. I can't help but wonder who was having more fun! It only gets better as time goes on. I just know that it will.

On a side note, but in my eyes probably the most important note, Herb's Parts has done work for me on this car before. When I was in over my head or up against a deadline, Herb took care of me and my car. So, I called him up to see what his thoughts were. The first words out of his mouth were "Where do you need me to go to get your car." He was instantly willing to do anything he could to help me get my car back and make sure that I was taken care of. Never have I ever had a business treat me more like family than they have. His entire family are just some of the most amazing people I've ever been privileged to know. If there's a silver lining to any of this, it's that I'll have an excuse to spend more time with them.

I hate to hear what happened to you even though we have never met. I pray that things work out for you in a good and positive way. It's also good to hear that others have been so benevolent and supportive during this stressful time. Good luck with everything from this point forward.

^^this

I'm also active duty and I also have a young son, and what I've found is that what I'm lacking most is time. Well.. that and money. I mean, who joins the military to get rich lol. Anyway between TDYs, deployments, time with the kid, time with the wife, "volunteerism", and other stuff.. I hardly have any time to devote in the garage to the car. While I don't think I bit off more than I could chew, if I was going to do most of the things I'd like to do to this car, it'd take me the better part of 5 years probably. Or more.

If you add it up and see what it would cost to send it out to get done, you'll spend more than you would if you just bought it done (or close enough to what you want). And it's not just a little bit; we're talking tens of thousands of dollars here. I don't know about you, but I'm not willing to wait 10+ years like some of these guys on this site to have a mostly done fun car. I want to enjoy it sooner rather than later, and most importantly I want my son to enjoy it with me as he grows. I want him to grow up with American iron in his blood.

Hence why I sold mine and I'm now in the market for one that's more done.

My $.02 :soapbox:

Sorry for your woes with the car and condo soldier. I have some experience with what you went through although not nearly as bad an outcome. Try. Not to sell the RR. But if funds and sentiment aren't behind the car - I'm with the group that says sell it and find a DD already done and be happy with your kid in that.

My experience is any decent daily driver is a car partially restored. At 40 plus years old i don't know if a affordable original DD really exists anymore unless you like new adventures. My point being yes its far cheaper to buy a car done or close to being done but even a reliable restored DD may be out of budget. He's got the car already and it sounds like its not far gone that it cant be put back on the road. If you can re coup the money you lost than doing at least the mechanical work yourself you should be able to have a nice reliable DD and restore the body a little at the time. Everybody always says buy the car done. Sure great idea. Im into my car for over 20G, Ask me if i had 20G when i originally bought the one i have now for 3G. I just didn't have 20-25 large laying around and if i did there were many other priorities than a hobby car. I suspect I'm not alone in that scenario.

Steve - I bought my 68 GTX 45 years ago for $1000. Little into to it until the last 5 years And to restore it to my taste it cost over $40k. I have sentimental value in the car which no one else would have.

First off thank you for your service..( both of you!) but is the place still in business? It makes me sick hearing this and it sounds like you have a lot on your plate to boot..
If that rat bastard is still in business I would make his life a living hell, I would would send a letter to the tv stations( most have a consumer advocate) I would plaster every social media outlet with a warning...and organize a small protest/picket with some brothers out front of their shop letting everyone that passes by that the business screwed a deployed soldier...
Man I'll keep you in my prayers, that things get better!

Absolutely call a TV station and talk to consumer affairs. With your service to our country (Thank You) I'm sure they will jump all over this in a hurry.

Good Luck

Thanks everyone for your comments, I really appreciate them. I think I'm mostly just upset about the whole situation and just find myself at a loss. I'm still waiting on transport to pick the vehicle up and still waiting for my friend to wire the money back to me, so we'll see.

As far as the business is concerned, the police are pursuing the individual for potential fraud charges. If this falls through, the only recourse will be civil and we'll have to take him to court.

Also, I wasn't deployed, I was just stationed overseas in Spain for a couple of years. I've deployed many times before, and being stationed in Spain was a Mediterranean vacation by comparison. I appreciate the sentiment, but I want to make sure I'm not casting the wrong impression.

I definitely won't sell it right away. I'll get it running and safe to drive again. I've got a Son now that I have desperately wanted to take to go get Ice Cream in that car ever since he was born two years ago. He loves cars and I owe him that, not to mention I deserve that moment myself. I'll see what my trustworthy car guy thinks about the cost of getting the rust handled. It's not bad, wheel well bottoms and door corners. I believe a smidge around the bottom drivers corner of the rear window. The floor, trunk and rails are beyond solid.

Didn't pay the guy upfront, he was supposedly nearing completion before I sent any money and I sent it through my friend under the guidance that he was verifying progress.

On a side note, but in my eyes probably the most important note, Herb's Parts has done work for me on this car before. Like I wrote... I feel your pain. My story was I bought a gorgeous red/black 73 Roadrunner 340 in 1984 and loved that car. When I got orders to NAS Bermuda for three years, I was planning to take it with me, which was cool for two reasons. One, I loved the car and two, the 340 would have made my car the fastest car in the country, and how often do we get to make that claim and be able to back it up? :) Sadly, the government in it's infinite wisdom, decided a month before we left to change the rules and they would no longer ship cars for on-base use only, so I had to put the car in storage.

Jump ahead a year, and a hurricane passes over Florida and fires a light pole right through the rear fenders. The storage lots removes the pole, but does nothing about the two huge holes in the quarters.

Jump ahead another two years, and I get back to my car and the *** end is pretty much gone. I close the trunk lid, and there's two decent mountains of rust falling out of the bottom of the quarters, which had been regularly filling up with water every time it rained. I loved that car... had been dreaming of driving it for three years... and there it sat... a gorgeous red from the backlight forward, and rusted to crap from the backlight back.

My first thought was to go get some panels and start getting the car back on the road, but once the emotional side of me got sent to bed without its dinner and the rational side took control of things, I had to admit that fixing the car was gonna be a bad idea. We had two little kids now, less money, and having a project car eating up any of that money was a bad idea. So I shopped around, found another 73 Roadrunner that was tan/tan with a 318, and bought it. I pulled the gorgeous black interior out of my wrecked 73 and put it in the new one, got a shop to put a 440 HP in it, and I ended up with a much better car for less than I would have paid to get the red one repaired. And best of all, I was driving it to work everyday instead of working on it. :)

We all love our cars, but sometimes you have to defer to your rational side.

That was a great story about B's car. Id say in B's case he made the right choice. The thing for me is how much does a 72 RR in daily driver condition go for in todays market? Your not going to get a decent reliable DD for what i think he wants or could spend at this point. His car again sounds like it could be a DD with a affordable amount of money and some hands on work
Not long ago i was talking with a guy who owned a restoration shop and sold cars. He told me to scrap my car even though the body was done and done right and painted. He told me buy one already done. Maybe he knew more than me but i wasn't about to part out a car with the body completely done. I want my car done my way and when i do drive down the road i know what was replaced, rebuilt and pretty much ever issue that car ever had now and before.

Well, I know a few of you have been waiting to see what was going to happen with my Roadrunner once I got it back. I still haven't yet. And a lot of digging has turned into me getting scammed. No work has been done to my car at all. It's been sitting for the entire 2 1/2 years I was stationed overseas. I can't express how utterly devastated and heart broken I am right now, but I'm sure you guys understand.

Before I moved overseas for my last assignment, I dropped my Roadrunner off at a family friends house for storage as they had plenty of room in a nice garage. It was safe there next to their classics and it was going to save me several thousand on paying to store it. While I was gone a paint and body friend of his offered to take care of the rust problems that were starting to become very apparent for $8K, just so long as he had the two years I was gone to work on it. This way he could take care of it in between his other jobs and not have to pay his guys labor on it. What was discussed was rotisserie, media blasting, replacement panels welded in where necessary to address rust and soft spots, priming, paint and replacement of trim. I simply couldn't say no for that price, though now I realize I should have.

Multiple missed deadlines later, police involvement and more, my car was found never touched. My friend is returning my $8k, paying for transport to get the car to a shop I choose and paying to have that shop make it at least safely driveable again.

I'm honestly just at a loss and devastated. I don't know who to trust anymore and with everything else occurring in my life, that $8K I'm getting back will have to go to getting my Wife's condo that we rent out sold as we are upside down in it and losing hundreds on it every month. So, what I'll be left with is rust I simply know I can't afford to fix anymore. I can continue to work on it bit by bit as I can, but saving up $30k+ for a professional paint and body job, simply isn't going to happen on E6 pay in a single income house. I'll regret it for the rest of my life if I sell this car, but I know I'll never be able to address the rust either and the sense of despair with the situation isn't helping either.

If this scumbag is still in business, contact the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint. Next, contact your state's Attorney General's office and file a complaint. Did you have any communication with this guy via postal mail while you were away? If so, did you keep it? If so, contact the Post Office and file a complaint. You might even check on Small Claims Court, but this amount may be too large. My experience with this is pretty much a waste of time, but it may be worth it. File a 'lis pendens' (sp?) claim against his property - blocks him from selling it, talk to attorney before doing this. Quit playing the victim and go on offense.

I do thank you for your service to our country and rip-off artists like this scumbag needs to be dealt with harshly. Do it.
