I am going to be getting some work done on the clutch and transmission and one of the things included is replacing the dust cover on the bottom of the bellhousing. The pos cover on there now is made of plastic and is basically melted. I assume the original cover was sheetmetal, is that right? I've seen repro covers in both plastic and metal, the metal one I'm looking at is by Brewer Performance. Is that a good choice?

Also, what would the correct OEM color be for that cover? Thanks.

Back then plastic was for door lock knobs, window regulator knobs, tail light and dome lenses, etc. Steel heavy duty clutch house covers, not just a cheap piece of tin.
What color is your bell housing?

That's what I thought. Bellhousing and trans are aluminum color (painted.)

The clutch cover is actually a heavier gauge steel than sheetmetal. If this is for a '67, the bellhousing (and clutch cover) should be painted the same turquoise as the engine. I've never bought a repro, but there are two sizes as seen below...

The 10 1/2" flywheels utilized an aluminum bellhousing. The 11" clutch used a cast iron bellhousing. You should have an 11".

Thanks. I'm pretty sure my bellhousing is cast iron. Brewer's gives bolt center dimensions for their repro cover which I will be checking and I'll make them turquoise.

Where did the dumb idea of the plastic covers come from?

Someone started repro'ing them in plastic a few years ago. Why in plastic...I have no idea why??? I think Year One was selling them, but I can't believe that an 11" clutch cover is that difficult of an item to find.

An update on this - I ordered the repro dust cover from Brewer's. It is a very well made part stamped out of heavy 1/8" thick steel. It came unfinished so I gave it a couple coats of turquoise with Dupli-Color engine paint. Going on the car soon.
