hello to all.i love my new conv sattie, i have noticed since i bought it that when getting up to speed there is a small clicking noise near the brake pedal.but goes away after i am in passing gear, when the 727 jumps in to the tall gear.i looked at the motor when running and the clicking isnt coming from the motor is this a natural occurance for these machines to hear that muffled clicking sound near the gas and foot pedals?i appreciate all ears and advice, thanks again,j penate, i love my country.

thanks for your reply,i havent looked at the speedo, when driving.what if it is jumping a bit?

just got back, no speedo jumping, just regular needle reading when speeds change. i noticed its coming from under the car driver side i think it could be a loosening bolt from the exhaust or pipes or another thing under the car. i will have to get her up in the air,any suggestions appreciated.

A leaf that gets into the heater fan can do this.
The stem sticks through the blades, and as you drive, the fan may freewheel, and you'll hear a ticking.
What happens when you turn the fan on?
If it a leaf, it will go away eventually.
You can run the fan on high, and if you have manual heater controls, open and close the main intake by moving the slider from heat to off.
When the fan speeds up, you can then open it again to
heat, and sometimes it will spit the leaf out right then.

Oh, it's UNDER the car, does it change with rpm?
May be the first sign of a u-joint dying, if you are lucky, grease might stop it.

wow good point i will check it tommorrow.thanks so much, for priceless info.

yes ,when at a stand still i give her gas when in park or driving at high rpms it starts , but slow crusing it doesnt.only when i lead foot her.

i know its not the u joints because i have it in park and rev it, it clicks .i am gonna see about the leaves in the fan ,thanks you guys.

This is getting mysterious.
Does it change with rpm while sitting still?
If it's a leaf in the heater fan, you'll hear that with the engine off.
It could be torque converter flex plate bolts hitting the sheet metal fill plate.
When you rev it, the crank will try to walk forward in the center main bearing.
If you have looseness there, this can happen. At one time, my 383 had about 3/8" forward travel in the crank, you could blip the throttle and watch the damper on front of the engine just jump foward.
Doesn't happen with a manual because of the pressure plate springs, or that's what I was told.

good point. i am not a mechanic .but can those bolts be torqued down manualy or does the tranny have to come out?i will see about the leafs first.also if it is the bolts thats dangerous isnt it?

When mine did that, I just bent the sheet metal panel forward enough that they didn't touch it anymore.
Maybe something hit the panel and bent it back some.
Watch the crank pulley at idle, give a little blip on the throttle and see if it walks forward a tiny bit.

exactly i just went under the car the plate has a little back and forth movement.sorry but what do you mean if it walks forward .you mean the car?

i get what your saying gonna try tommorow thanks so much,it does sound like that plate is clicking at high rpms ,i will bend forward a bit, thanks so much darthomas.

I mean the pulley, the crankshaft, the flex plate and the converter ALL walk forward in the engine. Kinda scary, but with floating piston pins, it's just something you can live with for years without too much worry in a street driver.
Now if you had rods that floated on the piston pins, like a 360, I'd be more concerned.
When it was time to rebuild mine, it turned out the wear was NOT on the center main bearing, it was on the thrust face of the crank itself, and needed to be welded up and re-machined.
Don't panic.

oooohhhh.ok interesting, yeah it rides smooth shifts perfectly i was depressed because i just got her last month,, i know there will be problems down the road in these machines,,its mechanical nature,i just want to cruise it for my first summer,,lol thanks again i will keep you posted my good friend.

To answer your question, if the speedo had been 'jumping' it would indicate a dry speedometer cable and they can make a clicking noise. Might be good to lube it anyway. Check the web for a video showing how.
