8 3/4 axle shaft removal

I already removed the drum (duh), backing plate and it's just down to the end of the axle with the spindle sticking out. What do I need to do to get the axle shaft out? This on a 64 with a 8 3/4. Thanks
 
Slide hammer, or a regular hammer with a block of wood.

I have always put the brake drum back on with the center nut turned a few turns and used that as a slide hammer....never had a problem getting one out. They made a special tool for doing it but never needed one.
 
After finally slowing down at work amd getting a chance to get back at it the axle shafts are still stuck. I dont know alot about 8 3/4 so bear with me. All thats left is the spindle. I can see the bearing. Ive tried putting the axle nut back on amd using the wheel and drum as slide hammer. Nothing. I made a slide hammer at work. Nothing. Do you have to remove anytning in the pumpkin to pull them out or do i just have a stuck one. Ill put some picks up later. Thanks
 
All I can say is this is from a '63 Chrysler manual.

I once had a stuck axle shaft (Ford 9" but same deal) and made up a ten pound slide hammer. I wailed away with it forever, no results. I went back to work and made a seventy pound sliding weight. The axle came out with the second pull...
 
My solution:

1. Remove entire rear axle assembly.
2. Replace axle assembly with one from later B-body.

I've tried, over the years to R&R these these early B tapered axle rearends. In the end it was easier to just swap it out. My full on Dana 60 is from an '86 Duallie and ALL IN with new axles, a spool and a race shop installing the 8 3/4 ends only cost ~$900.

I've tried, over the years to R&R these these early B tapered axle rearends. In the end it was easier to just swap it out. My full on Dana 60 is from an '86 Duallie and ALL IN with new axles, a spool and a race shop installing the 8 3/4 ends only cost ~$900.

Only cost ~$900?? For some people that's a huge amount of money to spend to replace something they already have that, given proper maintenance, will work perfectly. If you're a serious racer, then it makes sense, but for a cruiser.... not in a million years.

Now, if you really feel the need to get rid of the stock rear and can find a later model 8 3/4 for a couple hundred bucks and swap it out that's one thing. But for my money, its not worth the effort.

The 8 3/4 housing that was out of a Charger and was in the car until recently was only $50. It all depends on what your plans are with the car.
