Kind of a generic question, but what floor jack have you had good luck with over the years. Seems that most now a days are of minimal quality and only good for a few uses till they start leaking, etc.. Do the newer aluminum jacks offer any benefit over the old cast iron other than the weight advantage?

Thanks
Derek

I have a 3 ton floor jack from Sears and it have never given me a problem.

Looking for a jack that would go both high[24"] and low[less than 3"]... I only found one chi-com/steel unit. The small aluminum jacks can be pretty easy to tilt, and I can't pay a grand for a jack.

To my knowledge there are only 2 American floor jack makers left, HW & Milwaukee. They're both great & are rebuildable & would last multiple lifetimes, they are basically shop tools with no gimmicks. I've had really bad luck with China jacks, they may be cheap but always end up failing in the end. If you're on a budget I'd search CL for a used old American jack, beat up or not many were indestructible. Old time Sears was great, the green boat anchors they sold in the 70's never break.

I think I bought my Walker in '78. Re-sealed it for the second time last year. Ram seals get hard and crack over time then it leaks down.
Parts link for many brands.............

Don't laugh......I've had the harbor freight "low profile" 2.5 ton (now 3 ton) jack for 5 years with no issues.

Low enough to get under the LCA on my Satellite and fast to pump up.

It gets used a LOT!

I broke down and bought one of those aluminum jacks from China Freight. So far so good but haven't had it that long. My Lincolns were just too heavy for my back to handle anymore. Had two Lincolns for nearly 30 years and they were used when I got them. One started leaking finally and I bought rebuild kits for both. Tore one down and never did put it back together so it got junked after sitting on a bench for 3 years (no one wanted it) and I sold the other one that was starting to leak this year to my neighbor.

Still have my Craftsman form 35 years ago. Need to add a little oil here an there but still works fine. Doubt my Roush (Sams Club) will make it anywhere near that vintage

Cranky - I've though about aluminum myself. Too old vs to heavy. Let us know how it holds up

Will never buy aluminum and when the day comes i cant handel a steel one, then its time to hang it up. I will also never buy a HF or any other 100 dollar POS.... Years ago i had a knockoff Chinese pos collapse while i was jacking up a car. A weld broke and it came down. Thats was enough for me. I have a Walker i bought used when i was 16 years old and still have it to this day and I'm 64... Will be in the market soon for a new one and i suspect that will still be used well past when I'm gone

I have an old craftsman 3 ton I've had for 15 years and its get used a lot. It never leaks down its been a good one.

The welds have always been my concern with an aluminum jack. The one that Jegs sells or slaps their name on caught my eye as they have rebuild kits for it, and you would hope they would not endorse something that is lacking quality, but ya never know these days.

I bought a Craftsman in the early 70's that lasted a good 20 years before it started leaking. That's when this China stuff was half way good. Truth is I didn't know it was Shinese built.....

I can still pick up the heavy stuff but my back lets me know about it for the next several days.....plus I can't hang it up yet. I thought about the quality too but I still have a steel jack that will handle my diesel and the other heavy stuff.

I also have a older craftsman that works well but over time it will leak down.
mine is about 15 years old and is under the front of my bee right now and has been there for a week and its not dropped on to the jack stands yet. so i would say its not leaking for now

Anyone have any luck with a newer Craftsman?
Mine WAS 8 years old when it broke at the full up position. Car was sideways and no way to let it down.
I had to borrow a neighbors jack and add blocks to it to get the crapsman one out.
Called sears and they just laughed when I told them it was 8 years old.
I have a HF one now and it works fine.

I have a 3 ton and a 2.5.... They are branded Michelin love them both...quick lift, great valve, and very sturdy easily lifts my 5.9 4x4 2500.... I'm not sure coo, picked them up at a swap meet for $75 ea...I think they are the same ones Discount uses...

I have a 3-ton floor jack made of pure Chinesium, and it works fine...had it approx 18 years and no leaks yet (probably will now that I mentioned the word leaks)
