I have to replace them on the daughters 2001. Any problems using stock universal stuff at the parts store ?

the old lines should have an sae rating printed on them. get lines that meet the same rating. also buy the nicer fuel injection specific clamps too

Is the genuine Toyota stuff that much more expensive than the generic part, to risk having a failure due to lower quality? I always use genuine Toyota parts where possible just for piece of mind.

Agreed, but they are discontinued through Toyota.
