Advise and input on a 1968 charger

Hi there,

A little intro, i've been a big fan of american muscle cars and have been attached to cars since high school where a worked at auto shops in the summer to get to know cars more. Later on in life I moved to drag, road racing etc and been driving many car models since trying to get more but i always wanted to get a mopar and especially a 1968 dodge charger. Now the time has come and I've been looking for a 68 charger for a while. I'm looking for a solid driver that i can drive for a couple of years before restoring. Would love a manual 4 speed car with 383 or 440 but an auto 318 is ok if the price is right as later on I can replace the trans and engine if not rebuilt if it was a 383 or 440. The issue is I won't be able to see the car as I don't live in the US and would ship the car back home. Although I love 68 chargers and have some info I don't know everything about them and also what to look for. I'm only looking at pics and videos of the car to make a decision.

Your typical flip job....lots of things questionable on this car...

May be the video but I hear a ticking noise from the engine..

What is that green can on the passenger side inner fender?

One thing to keep in mind since your overseas is shipping costs and parts availability. Mopar parts parts are very costly and then add high shipping costs.

It may be in your best interest to pay more upfront for one that fits your choice than building one and probably costing you even more in the long run...

Thanks for your input can you please elaborate on what is questionable on the car ? Regarding the green can i have no idea to be honest, and yes I'm pretty sure the dealer bought it fixed some issues to flip it.

Yes I'm aware mopar parts are expensive and that i have to factor in shipping costs but this is the case with most cars here in our part of the world there isn't anything we can do about it unless dealerships provide them or auto shops.

I would love to pay more upfront and get a car that fits my choice than building it but that will surpass my budget as anything in good condition is not less than 45-50K
 
The paint job alone says a lot on the overall quality of everything else....chargers are prone to rusting out and requires a lot of body work..but one good thing the car is mostly complete.

It would also be in your best interest to hire an inspector to go over the car since you cannot inspect yourself in person. Before you drop any coin on a potential disaster...
 
The car has been restored 6-7 years back, lower rear right quarter panel has been replaced. Was originally a 318 column shift auto now a 383 floor mounted auto. Has some surface rust on the under body. He mentioned that the car hasn't been in any accidents. He replaced the front K member bushings and consumables. My main concern to be honest is mainly the body as I wouldnt pay a huge amount in terms of panel replacement due to rust, down the line I will replace engine and trans and also suspension. I'm under the impression that the car mechanically and body wise in good shape.

I instantly noticed the fan shroud missing, battery is in the trunk, wires or vacuum lines falling out of hole where ashtray used to be, toggle switch mounted on gauge plate,block is painted gold instead of blue,Dodge Ram Truck carpet covers, no headrests on seats (and the ugliest coverage ever!), there are no controls for heat or fan that I can see(seems to be missing), on image 7 see how the rear of the center console overhangs into mid air? IMO, it's a 68 Charger that upon close inspection of pictures only, will and does need alot of things changed, parts found, gone through and fix mistakes. All of this stuff adds up awful quickly when we are talking a Charger! I would only spend around 20K on this Charger if nothing else was wrong. There is alot more out there!
 
I'm with pappy on this one. It appears all of the wiring is cobbled and would lead to problems. If you want to end up with a correct appearing Charger, you would be spending a ton of money in this country. Probably twice as much in yours. You could spend a few thousand dollars just on the dash alone. I know because I have just finished with mine. I see there is an electric pusher fan on the radiator. Who knows if that extra current flow is going thru the amp gauge waiting to cause a fire. That bumper jack hook won't work on that car. It appears there are plenty of leaks on the engine and transmission. With the evidence of trashy workmanship on this car that is visible, you have to know there is more that is hidden. I wouldn't pay much over $18,000 USD
 
I have a 69 Satellite I bought back in 2010 for $4250 car was complete & I drove it two hours home. It's a 318 car column shift 906 trans but has all the rust issues. I have stalled a few times on the process of cloning this car over to a road runner. Currently I have around 13K total invested between building a up a 440 & 727, body work on floor pan, trunk pan, L&R rear quarters and lots of parts. Still have a ways to go. Finally I decided to just buy a real road runner as it will actually work out cheaper. Check out www.streetsideclassics.com that's where I got mine but be patient and have someone go over the car. I didn't and I have oil leaks and transmission leaks that weren't present for the two weeks I looked at car. Patience is key though. I looked several months before I found my bird. Good luck.

That's a lot of coin for a car that has issues. I agree with the majority on here - keep looking and find one with less to do even if you have to pay more for it. I don't envy you trying to buy a muscle car and ship it to your home country. Lots to deal with. Anything you're looking at buying should,be inspected first.
 
Thanks all for your comments and I passed on the car and another that I got inspected. I'll just have to be patient and the right one will show up.

To be honest I thought of the idea of getting a 69 or 70 charger and found great examples out there, but theres something about the 68 whether it's front grill, rear taillights, first year 2nd gen and I know if I get either or them I'll always think of the 68.

I'm checking all car sale websites and also cars for sale in the forum and in another. Hopefully its just a matter of time to get one.
