project car, the 273 had been sitting sometime when I got it. I get it up to temp. original rad boiled and checked, the thermostat check ng boiling water, it opens. the upper hose will get real hot, the bottom hose is totally cool. the heater hoses are hot. water is boiling.
can the block be clogged up? ( dirt daubers), or it the water pump just not pumping?

Pull off a heater hose after it's cooled down and use the house water hose to flush the block out.

I would suspect if it where mud daubers, the nest would be turned to mud and flushed through the system in short order.

I will pull the heater hose and try flushing. I tried to flusg it from every other place yesterday. I might take the air hose and a rag and try blowing air thru it too?
I have only had it idling here, a little yard drive as I have worked on it. it was not boiling over then. later, I loaded it on trailer and took it to have exhaust bent, while there it developed a leak at the rad tank. took it to rad shop had that fixed and checked out good. now it boils over pretty quick. I will persevere!

Simple check. Pull the thermostat, and re-install the housing. Pull the radiator cap, start the engine, and look in the radiator for flow.
With the stat out, if the pump is working, should be flowing fairly good. Any chance the lower radiator hose is collapsing? It can/will if there's no spring installed.
If flow looks good (pump working), re-install the stat, but still with the cap off, try it again. Once the coolant temps up, the stat should open...and flow. Your not putting the stat in up-side-down are ya?

Maybe verify that the thermostat works. Pot of water on the stove, and a meat thermometer. Don't tell the wife.

first thing I did was verify the thermostat working. I did find the dist. bolt had loosened and timing had way a dvanced. set it back bout right. next, I will check value lash. I forget which engine, but one had a screw that would not tighten and tried to ding the thread on that hard sucker to no avail.... I am getting no flow as it comes to temp, then it starts to boil over, gonna try flushing from other directions next. very rare if water pump pellers are bad I figure.

ran it some with t stat out before I did the flush. I never have had this . nevr had one that would not flow. I eventually will pull the water pump, but not convinced the block is not plugged somewhere. I have another car i'm piddling with right now. when its 100 degrees and heat index 110, I lose "vigor"! ha

The old time way I was taught was to fill the radiator or block, without the thermostat while holding your hand over the lower outlet (lower radiator hose unhooked from the radiator.) Pull your hand off quickly. If water gushes out, if not, you know where to start.
