I am looking at buying my first Mopar. I have found one in pretty decent shape, just needs a floor pan. The owner tells me that it is a 1968 Belvedere GTX. He goes on to explain how rare it is because of the factory air and the fact it has a 318 2-barrel in it. Is there a way to positively identify it as a GTX without any paper work? From what I have read it should have had a 440. For what it is worth it is a post car with pop out rear windows. I believe he said the car was made in Los Angeles. Please excuse my ignorance of this subject.
Thanks,
Brad

318= not a GTX. But that does not mean it's not worth buying. Somebody here will tell you how to read the vin number.

Yes, it would have come with either a 440 (standard) or a 426 (option). That fact that there is a 318 in it now may not be relevant, but I'd be suspicious. The VIN # should start with RS if it's true GTX. Such as RS23L8G123456.

Welcome to the board and hit the Welcome Wagon thread there newbie.

post the VIN#, and someone here will help out. There are no Post car GTX's.
Post cars are cool though, regardless. it is all about how much he wants for it.
I suspect it could be a Sport satellite, and they are very similar.(Grille, tail lights, Interior.)

Sport satellite was not available with post either, post car must be a satelite, road runner or belvedere

He did say it is a numbers matching car but sometimes people will say anything to sell a car. I'll swing by in the morning to get the VIN. Thanks for the help!

If it's numbers matching and a 318, it is not a GTX. It is either, not numbers matching or not a GTX. Will know more once you have the VIN. If you can snap some pics that would help as well.

I'm betting it starts off RL21G8 whitch would be a 68 belvedere coupe with a 318

That would be my bet.....................MO
So close but so far away. You know what they say about horse shoes and hand grenedes! It is RL21F8E.

This is what I found using decoders:
Model: Plymouth Belvedere or Satellite R
Price Class: Low L
Body Type: 2 door coupe or sedan 21
Engine: 318ci V8 2bbl (LA motor) F
Year: 1968 8
Assembly Plant: Los Angeles, CA E
Would this be the consensus here?

One more nugget I will add, it has a bench seat and it does not have the chrome trim on the trunk like a Roadrunner would have. If it is not raining this afternoon I will swing by to take a couple of pictures. Any area in particular?

Sounds like you've found a perfect candidate to do whatever you want to it. 318 car, post, 1968.....what's not to like?! As long as you can make him understand he does not have a road runner and you know that, perhaps you can come to an agreement at a reasonable price. Have a good look over it though. Floors are indicators of many more little hidden spots, but not necessarily deal breakers. Take your time, this will reflect on the value. :)

There isn't any convincing that is going to take place because he is convinced this is a rare 1 of 59 GTX cars with these options. Plus it was suppose to come from some person's private collection that is suppose to mean something. Is it possible that this is some odd one off car that got out of the factory? I am guessing without the build sheet or something else no one will ever know.
I do like the car. I have always thought that Chrysler made beautiful muscle cars. The floor pans are the only visible rusty problem. You can see the passenger tire thru the front and it has bondo on the driver's side floor pan. The good news is a complete floor plan, left to right and front to back, goes with the car. $14k is what he wants. I think the cost would be reasonable if the complete floor pan did not need to be replaced. Reasonable price is like beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder.
Thanks!

A belvedere with rusted out floor pans is not worth
14 grand to me but I guess it could be to some.

DAMN $14K What about the Brooklyn Bridge for 100 bucks?
Rusted out floors and the rest of the body is good. I don't think so.
Pictures (good Pictures)

Here we go again... some dumbass with a Mopar he doesn't know diddly squat about, or a scammer, claiming all sorts of rarity and looking for double what the car is really worth.. I've been through this countless times over the years... read what the guys have posted here, it's your best bet for accuracy... hey, you can pay whatever you want, that's your business, as long as you know what your getting, a plain-Jane run-of-the-mill car...

Know what is just as curious to me as someone thinking a car is something it is not?
That would be the person who doesn't believe or understand that the internet will help a potential buyer find the truth about said car.
