Price Check: 1969 Charger R/T

Okay, some updates. I called the seller and he is still saying 'that car is worth 35 and you know that is fair'. If I am to get the car under 35, it looks like I will have to bid on eBay. My wife says to just place a 29,999 bid on eBay and walk away.

I refuse to buy any car unless I can drive it first. I've told the seller this multiple times. The car is in his back yard, and three 'Cudas plus a LARGE fifth wheel camper need to be moved before the Charger can get to the driveway. He needs to 'borrow a truck' to pull the fifth wheel out, then push, or tow the 'Cudas. This was supposed to happen this morning, but I just did a quick drive by and nothing has moved.

So, still in a holding pattern.

Not to high jack my own thread, but I'm in Wyoming next week. My friend up there found this car last month:
https://wyoming.craigslist.org/cto/5671508192.html

My friend drove it and checked it out. He says some small bubbling along the rockers, trunk has mild scale but no rot, and the 440 V8 is a sweet monster that is perfect. Needs exhaust work, and the dash wiring looks like a three year went crazy under there. Gauges out, and various electrical issues. For me to be happy, I'd have to do a Wilwood front disc, Classic Air, and convert BACK to power steering (seller said he could never get the steering box adjusted it just turned to the right all the time, so he converted to manual steering).

This car was $18,000 three months ago, $16,400 now. If I like it and can't find too much bondo, I might offer $12,000, maybe $14,000, but then have $1900 in shipping to Tucson.

I REALLY WANT THIS CHARGER R/T, but unfortunately anything over 29 would break the bank. My budget would be blown and the car would probably sit in the garage 5 years before I had funds to get it roadworthy.

Keep the opinions going. I'll update you tomorrow if there is any news.

Take care, Bill

While I'm also in the market for a 69 Charger, seems like the guy doesn't want you poking around his car to find any issues to lower the price. Sounds like he's hoping for someone to see it, impulse buy it take it off his property and then find out all of the things that need to be fixed as soon as they get it home.

If you want a Charger then hold out for a Charger. You will not be happy with anything else. The 68 coronet is nice but not a real 440 car. Be patient and find the right car, there are still plenty out there.

I had a good laugh when you said the owner couldn't figure out how to fix his power steering issue. So simple to adjust.

I agree, but Chargers are hot right now. I'd still offer him 30 large cash in person and if he says 35, then split the difference. If it's that solid, there's no sense loosing it over a couple grand.

Like your 'snow ball' example earlier, the same can be said about the purchase. My budget has always been 29, which keeps about 5 to be used for the car. If I go much higher, the car becomes a unused relic in the garage for a few years.

I've been in the market for almost 10 years. The Charger is exactly what I have been searching for, but to be honest, I'm starting to talk myself out of it. The fact that the seller has neglected the car, and seems unmotivated to sell the car, or even work with me a little, is convincing me that owning a B Body may not be in the cards. I exited the market 20 years ago and just can't re-enter. You either need $125,000 to buy a car, or have $35,000 to buy a car and another $30,000 to put back into it. Kind of frustrated; a 318 Coronet with a 440 V8 is looking like the kind of car I need to buy.

I'm with you on the driving the car part - I would never spend that kind of money w/o giving it a good run and checking it out pretty well. You don't want to find out a lot of stuff after purchase.

A 68 coronet is still a B body just not a Charger.

Just try to find the nicest you can swing and enjoy it as it is. Maintain it and fix what it needs as it is needed. They don't have to be restored to perfect to enjoy. 68-70 Chargers will always be hot no matter what happens.

You should certainly be able to purchase a solid, quality driver for your price. Wether or not you sink another 30k into it over the next decade is completely up to you. At least you're behind the wheel.

You are correct. What I really meant to say was a factory numbers matching 440 B Body is just not in my affordable range.

I'd be happy with a 318 Coronet that has a 440 727 if the body was solid. I can turn a wrench, so adding Classic AC, Wilwood disc conversions, and even power steering is within my capability and budgets. Trunk and floor pan rot is a show stopper, but quarter panels does not scare me too much.

I just drove by the place again tonight (literally 1 mile from my house and on the way to and from errands); nothing has moved. If the car sells on eBay, he needs a fast plan to get it to a hauler.

Thanks for the links. Shipping to Tucson is expensive and I need to see and drive what I buy.
I really want an Arizona or western car that doesn't have a lifetime of bad weather exposure.
The Wyoming car is a long shot, but since I'm visiting anyway it is something to consider. At 14k I'd have a big budget to make it what I want.

It's occurred to me that the charger may stall at 27350 on eBay, we will see if I'm still in the game today.

Going to stop by on the way home from church today and meet the seller. Updates later.

The first Coronet sold for $25K! Nice car, but $25K? I feel much better about my resto. I'm showing the ad to my wife and saying "See, I told you!"

Yeah I know what you mean, I have been thinking about parting ways with my R/T lately. I was going to ask $35K, now I think I need to ask more like $45K to $50K if I sell it.

I thought the belts were going to jump off of the pulleys in the video for that one.
