Hi All,
I recently purchased a original panel 68 Charger. I am the 4th owner. The Charger is a matching numbers stock 318 car with auto trans.. I am planning to keep it a regular use vehicle. And as it is all stock... would love to hear what things fellow members recommend I do to it to enhance performance without changing its originality. The car has 110000/miles on it. It is not a rebuilt engine. The suspension is also stock with brakes. The radio doesn't work. Its missing the antennae. Small repairs are needed like all the rubber seals need replacement.
So any advice will be appreciated.

Weatherstripping is easy to do. Rebuild suspension (48 years old), maybe add disc brakes. Good luck.

I just asked for all of this in your first post, and you have already delivered! Solid car there!

I see from the pics someone has already converted it to electronic ignition so you're 1 up there, I absolutely agree with a disc brake conversion for the front, SSBC makes a very nice kit if you're willing to drop the $ on it, also I agree with the suspension rebuild, i.e. service items, etc. I'm looking at a Polygraphite kit from P.S.T.,as well as Hotchkis or ADDCO sway bars for mine as turning seems to be a nearly 45 degree adventure lol

I will add that the vacuum operated headlight doors on those cars are problematic, alot of guys I know have converted/retrofitted to electric motors from a pontiac fiero wired into the headlight circuit.

Food for thought...

Nice find!! The problem with looking for things to replace/rebuild is that it's never ending :BangHead:

Good thing I REALLY enjoy it.
Enjoy your '68!!!:welcome:

Yes, I was thinking along the same lines as most of the comments so far... and thankyou all for the compliments.
I was thinking of these things:

1. Fix the oil leak (noticed some oil in the driveway).
2. Get a better radiator with shroud and overflo bottle.
3. Guy I got it from gave me a new set of leaf springs. So yes for now just rebuild suspension... later on plan to go with the independant link suspension with sway bars.
4. Radio needs fixing... gonna just fix it and not mod it.
5. Drivers side seat foam needs replacing.
6. Brakes need a complete upgrade to disk all around.
7. Complete engine and trans rebuild.
8. Replace ALL rubber seals and weather proofing.
9. Wanna install the Grant removable steering.

Am sure I am missing to-do stuff...

10. Wanna replace the wheels with the Rally wheels... I think they keep the car humble looking yet nice.
11. Got a new set of header with this car... not going to put them on.
12. Need to do another fresh resto of interior... it really smells like an old car.
13. Lastly down the road get it properly repainted (right now the last owner just resprayed on top of old). Maybe fuel injection.

Nice survivor you got there. Myself, I would do only what is required to make it road safe and enjoy the heck out of it. Old car smell? You bought an old car! An awesome one at that. Get some air fresheners, (pine trees were common then!), roll down the windows and cruise and wave back. Because you will be waving. Congratulations.

Drop in a Hemi !!!!!! :steering:

4. Radio needs fixing... gonna just fix it and not mod it.

The previous owner just installed a retro AM radio in mine just before I bought it, and other than making sure it worked, I haven't turned it on. The exhaust is music to my ears!!

Drop in a Hemi !!!!!! :steering:
Guy who sold it to me had a hemi with Dana setup for drop in into this vehicle... at the last minute he couldn't get himself to alter it... even got the I think its called a K member for it.

Quick question... This car came without A/C; but it has vents for regular outside air... I noticed that I seem to be inhaling quite a bit of fumes inside the vehicle whilst driving... Any ideas as to what it may be?

You could put a black vinyl top on it to break the color. That would look very cool. Great car by the way. I would leave the 318 in it if it's going to be your daily driver.

Just maintain it ,redo the soft parts and upgrade the brakes leave the little 318 alone if you want a everyday cruser they can't be beat unless it's a drag race then your sh!t out of luck . Leave it be and enjoy it
Build a hemi why you are driving it just in case some wants to race you on an up coming weekend

Cool 68, if you'd be closer I think I'd try to make a deal on the old school Cragars.
I wonder why the Charger scrip's are on the front fender, and not on the sail panel, that's different?
Get yourself another ECU box, (that ORANGE thing on the right fender well), get the chrome Mopar Performance one put it on and throw the Orange box in the trunk for a spare. Or keep the Orange hooked up and put the Chrome in the trunk.
Get a fire extinguisher and put behind the passenger seat or somewhere, your choice, it's a 48 year old car.

Edit: Missing the antenna, maybe it's stuck somewhere in the car, I see a black car cover, people remove the antenna when covering their car. Did the PO tell you the antenna was missing? Check the cracks where the rear quarters meet the trunk floor in the trunk.
