i found a set of used keith black piston locally for sale:

Keith Black aluminum flat top pistons with notches for mopar 400 ci. motor. Pistons are .040 overbore. Pt. No. SKB240-040. You get pistons and connecting rods

my question is one of opinion, would you buy used pistons or not?? i have 2 people I trust 1 saying heck ya, the other no way.

I think if were a machinist and had all the tools to check them - maybe.

I'm a big user of used stuff but not Pistons.

Hi, would I buy them no. some times saving a couple of bucks can bite you in the *** later on.
we really need more info here about the build your planning. you need to have an experienced engine builder look at them closely, you would be amazed at what an trained eye can see. are you planning on making any real power with this build, Hypereutectic pistons are only 30% stronger over stock cast. why are they for sale in the first place? stock rod? aftermarket? floating wrist pin?pressed? how where they abused I mean used.At the least you need to have the rods checked out .the price it will cost you to have them magnafluxed ,shot peened, resized and new bolts ,balanced, you could just about buy new aftermarket rods.that are stronger ,balanced ready to go. what bore is your block now? STD bore, 10,20 over now? I wouldn't give up cylinder wall thickness for a good deal.
Also To accurately calculate your final static compression ratio the following values must be known: Bore diameter, stroke length, rod length, deck height, combustion chamber volume, cylinder head gasket compressed thickness, and cylinder head gasket bore diameter.
Block and crank are the foundation , plan your build around that. build it the way you plan on driving it . not around "well I have these used pistons and rods " i'm sure your engine builder would agree. its just so much easier and cheaper to start at A instead of K when planning a new build. good luck my Mopar brother .

I`ve built engines with used pistons before but only if they measure good and are not scuffed up or collapsed. Usually they are a few tenths out from each other and that can mean it takes more time to hone the block. Pins need to be checked along with the rods. If they are pressed pins it becomes an issue to balance them. It can be risky to press the pins out sometimes. I recently had a guy come in for a balance job and he had a used set of pistons. Dyno time only he was told. That may have been true but one piston was a replacement and was nine grams light. I did get the numbers I was looking for but it was a lot more work. In this case he should have left them where he found them! It can be a crap shoot but it can work out too. Just some things to think about when considering used parts.

I've built several engines with used pistons and no issues and in fact my old machine shop for many years called me the rering king. But like anything else you need to make sure there are no damaged ring lands, etc.. Clean the parts really well and bead blast if necessary then examine all potential stress points. Sometimes more damage can be done by the person assembling/disassembling the engine so look for hammer marks and so on.

WOW !! thanks guys!! especially mopower817 , i'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, so i called mine, he agrees with you! think i'll wait.. i dont need to get into the bottom of my motor, runs good, was thinking what if.. down the road.

thank you to everyone for the feedback !!
