I guess more of a bitch session then anything else... had to get it off my chest.
I found out I was missing the simple support rod that goes between fender and frame on right front quarter panel on my Coronet. Hit the web sources and called _ _ _ to get one coming. Sure enough they had it in stock for a mere $23.00, but the guy said he would have to get back to me on shipping to Alaska. I get a call back an hour later with an estimated shipping cost of $34.00 for Fed-Ex GROUND, get there in two weeks...this is the part where I lost it! My initial response was "Are you f- - king crazy, $57.00 for a 12" piece of rod! I asked if he would just stick it in a US postal envelope and mailed it for a total cost of 6 bucks? Response..."Oh we don't do that sir, this is your only option. I quickly told him YES, I do have other options, I will build the 12" long part in 20 minutes and he can cancel me off his mailing list.
I am so tired of being bent over from these shipping companies and venders that just "go with the flow" and expect us to suck it up and be sheep without making any noise. There are lots of major vendors that advertise free shipping....in the lower 48 states. They will ship FREE from Ca. to Maine and not cost a dime, but ship the same distance(roughly) to AK and you are charged like the parts are being escorted by a brinks truck. I have even asked if I can have parts picked up by Fed-Ex at their door with my companies account number and billed to me? "We only ship UPS, sorry".
We do have some great people and companies out there to work with, usually smaller then the "big box" chains and more on a personal level with customers. Take Dr. Diff for instance, who will throw these things in a box and mail it via US postal without a second thought to help save us money. I understand that I choose to live here in Alaska and should expect more costs to have stuff sent up, which I do. But when some of these companies won't even entertain OTHER means of shipping to save their customers money, I quickly realize there is no real customer service. I am sure the guys in Canada and overseas feel the same way and try every way they can to be creative with shipments to save some of the costs....Please just excuse my bitching or ignore this post, I will get back to a more human status soon.
