I was driving the all of a sudden the dash light went out all other lights seem to work dome light, blinkers and the radio works just no light .. the dimmer worked a little funny ..

Gauges work just no dash lights I looked at the fuses and they looked ok I guses I can check them with a test light

Check to see if your cigarette lighter light is working. If so then you may have a faulty connection to your gauge board. Check your ground wiring as well.

71 have the thumbwheel? Spray the adjuster with electrical contact cleaner. Use a lot.

I had a similar issue and a buddy of mine found this:

Good news on the dash lights. We were able to diagnose the problem as a faulty dimmer switch. These are very expensive so I decided to try rebuilding it. It works like a charm! Installed 10 new bulbs in the instrument panel, the dome light and the ash tray light, all properly functioning.

Dash lights source goes through 2 diff fuses in line.

first one is the same what feeds the parking lights sytem as does the glove box and dome light. Its a 20 amps fuse. This fuse is PRE lights switch

Once gets into the switch, the dimmered feed ( output from switch ) goes back to the fuse box and gets another fuse just to dimmered lights, then spliced from there to all the dash system.... right side one on top of fuse box ( number 5 if numbered ). Its a 3 or 5 amps fuse, can't recall

thanks I will have to check it out

I'm chasing the same frustrating gremlin. If I don't get to the bottom of it soon, I'll probably pull the entire dash over the winter and verify every single connection.

.....year by year differences in wiring.
And especially things I took for granted, like 5 volt regulated feed being on during accessory position, or not.
IF you work on a dimmer rheostat, know in advance the wire in the coil is special resistance wire and CANNOT be reliably soldered. It must be Hard crimped if you want to salvage it.
My new ride offers NO Electrical information to the user, and I am ammeter sensitive. I want to know voltage AND charging direction and amount.
I had always bookmarked "tail lights and dash lights" mentally as a logic benchmark.

I think mine is a bad (brand new) headlight switch. All my other lights work just fine. However, there's no power coming back to the fuse block from the tan wire out of the switch. I'd just live with it, but I found some loose vacuum lines left by the "professional" shop I paid to put the car together. So, over the winter, I'll pull the dash assembly and trace out all the vacuum lines and get to the bottom of the light issue.

i had to replace my headlight switch to get the lights on the dash to work again
