There was a study done by the University in Michigan comparing flow rates in various mufflers.
The car used for the testing was a 1970 Road Runner with a 383.
I think the an article was written in Mopar Action magazine some time ago.
Anyway, here are the results of the testing.

Too bad their testing never included any of the higher end muffler like Corsa or Borla.

Yea that wold have been nice along with a few other mufflers out there, BUT, I bet the collage kids themselves paid for the mufflers. Each kid brought in what he thought was "The Bad *** muffler, the one to use." and perhaps later installed it on there rides.... perhaps not in the case of the flow masters... LOL!
I had always recomended the Chambered Hookers, the Dyno Max turbo's and the Hooker or Dyno Max, max flow mufflers, dependent on the sound you lie. Since each is a different muffler. The one I didn't see was the Thrush turbo muffler. They were very popular in the 70's and 80's until the Flow Master came out.
I Currently run the Aero Chambers on my big block street Duster. (Nothing fancy....)
The Dyno Max turbo's on my Magnum. I swapped out the VT's. Not my cup of tea. Good for the track. They remind me of the Max Flows but only with a flap for quite idle and low rpm cruise.

I've been looking at these, how do they sound? I never really cared for the flowmaster sound.

They actually sound like the flowmasters that I replaced, only a little mellower and a lot less droning. I still have a mild drone at a certain rpm, but it's tolerable.

I did the same today. And I agree with your comments 100%. 1800 to 2000rpms the flow masters were hard to take. Dynomax ultras have a similar sound just toned down a bit.
