440 in 65 Belvedere

I have a 65 Coronet with a 440 and full TTI system. The headers are the bigger size and from the headers back are 3 inch with the X pipe. The headers were a little tricky to get in but fit fantastic. The Tailpipes from the mufflers back also fit fantastic. Someone really did their homework on them. The pipes from the headers back to the mufflers were a waste of money. It's like so much time was spent designing the headers and tailpipes there was no time left for the exhaust pipes before the deadline. I am going to buy some 3 inch elbows (more expense) and make some changes. Then I'll have to sort out the parking brake problems.. Sorry but I am not happy with it and that's trying to assemble it on a hoist. I couldn't imagine doing it on jack stands.

Thank you That's real good feedback...especially for a senior like me !

I have TTI headers and 2 1/2" exhaust system with the X pipe on my 65 Belvedere. The X pipe interferes with the park brake cable and will need to be rerouted. H pipe setup looks like there would be more room for the cable, but I'm not sure. Pipe fitment was easy except for the cable.

Thanks . Good info. I noted that the park brake cable was routed over the crossover. Not sure that's the best routing......and like I mentioned previously I'm undoing whatever may have been done 5-7 years ago. I may fab a new bracket for the PB cable to elimimate the potential for binding.

Thanks again for the response. Very much appreciated.

Just refer to me as " the old guy ".

"Old guy", I have TTI headers, X pipe and 3" exhaust to the rear bumper on my 65. Fit was good. Had to do some jiggling for the minitubs and relocated springs. Installed the exhaust with the car on jack stands, no hoist for me.
My PB cable goes through a hole in the trans crossmember, then through a couple of brackets located generally under the seats. The PB cable touches the exhaust in one place, but not considered a major problem. The PB cable was installed after the exhaust was in.

Flat Side Glass, my 3" exhaust went in relatively easy. May be a dumb question, but is the X piece from the header to the mufflers upside down. I only ask because I fought with mine for a while, then flipped it over and it fit better. Also, TTI suggests to install from the rear to the front. I went front to rear because of the minitub/spring relocations.

I probably should not but in, but camshaft design has improved so much lately. A Mopar 484 is really not a piece to have. They may drive well, but the newer stuff sure has more power & better economy??

I have the full TTI package on my Coronet. Stuff fits awesome. Yes, they are expensive, but well worth it as the are no " me hung low" pipes to get tagged by road issues like some of the cheaper units. Another big plus, which is key for me, those babies are made here in the U.S. Hookers and many others are not. I put a set of thermal coated Hookers on a customers 67 Camaro and you would think after making them since 67 that they would have it down but one side hangs 2" lower than the other for no reason, and a pisser for me, $600 headers made in China. Why did that guy pay big bucks for poor fit AND to be made overseas. Not right!

Sure is an interesting commentary and sure worth our consideration. Chinese parts sure do have some issues.

I have had Hedman Headers on my car for about 18 years. Still fine. Didn't cost a grand. I run 3 inch exhaust system from a muffler shop back then. I went to an x pipe. To keep the PB cable from rattling on the exhaust, I made a simple rod with a hole on each end that bolts to the front bucket seat bolts closest to the console.

In my opinion the kit would have been better if none of the joints were welded. There is one joint they say to weld so why not weld them all. By doing that all the joints can be indicated and tweaked for optimal fit. Originally mine came with the wrong collectors. The correct collectors for a 65 have a wiggle or offset in them. I had the correct collectors shipped out. It is unfortunate that the offset doesn't line up with the notch in the crossmember. The collectors have 3 or 4 pie cut pieces welded together to make the offset.
If they went to that work would it have been that much more to make them line up with the notch??

Yes I do have this section/the intermediate pipe with the X in correct. But thanks for asking. It would be easy to put it in upside down. The floor actually the entire body is original with no alterations or patching to the floor. As I was typing this something came to my mind. Perhaps the X section is the wrong one, for a different car.. It's only a thought. What has me baffled is the headers and the tailpipes fit so good and the intermediate piece fits like it's for my Ford..
I am not new at this either. Been a plumber for almost 40 years and used to fab. and connect piping on locomotives for a living so this is not new to me.
OK I'm done whining,, Thanks for listening/reading

Wow ! Gotta look at the crossover. Great input. Never thought of that but quite possible . I can only
undo what was done years ago... one step at a time. Thanks very much !!!

Will the Hedmans fit in without having to lift the engine out, also, I have the stock starter (no PB, no PS)?

My 65 Doge had the double hole e brake bracket on rear frame rail so I could use later, 66 and newer brake cables. You have to make a bracket to mount front cable. You need the piece that connects the two cables.
Need to be inventive to connect the two. I did it no pictures I'm sure you can handle that.

Good input. Thank you.

It was in the engine from " way back when". I agree, it will come out and a newer design will be installed along with an update to the rest of the valve springs, etc.

Thanks very much. Will note that as I work thru the updates.

If you have the exhaust manifold studs, they will cause issues. Also you have to use a Dakota mini starter.
