I have the original 383 in my 69 RR. It's a 727 and 3:23 rear. Only modifications I can see is Edelbrock 1806 carb and Hooker Comp headers.

How do I make this thing faster off the line? I will likely never race it although some amateur passes would be fun at the local dragway.

I'd like to keep my budget around 2k.

I'm not familiar with the 1806, but folks used to slap on a set of headers and a 750 cfm carb and go to the track and clean house. Recurve your dist. and that will open things up too. Good Luck

The 1806 is 650 with electric choke. Nothing fancy. Also, I should've pointed out my engine performance knowledge is very limited. I'm gonna google recurving the distributor lol...

I'll likely need directions on which parts, good prices if used etc.. I'm not trying to make 500 hp just want a good healthy rumble and some go if I decide to push the pedal down.

Make sure you have 10-3/4" torque converter (wide ring gear). Try 3.55 gears and 750 cfm carb, and an electric cooling fan

Is there way to check the size of the torque converter while they're still mated?

Pull the tin inspection cover and look at the ring gear. If needs to be about 3/4"- 1" wide. If it's 1/2" or less it's the larger converter. Bad for performance.
Also need to look at getting an edelbrock RPM intake. Wieand make a decent dual plane intake too. Think it's model 8008

Will the RPM intake fit underneath the hood? I remember reading about some intakes not fitting. If it fits, I'll def be in the market for one.

Concur with "727",but no need for elec.fan. 3.55-3.73 years as an option. You've already got some good size headers, just need to up velocity in intake& engine rpm for the headers.

Ok, so what do I need to change the rear end gears? What parts am i looking for? Also, can anyone tell me if the rpm performer intake will fit?

I plan to gather these parts up during the winter.

The RPM would not fit My 68 with a 440, the 383 is a shorter deck height and might work. I used a Eddy TM7 with a 1in open spacer and a drop base air cleaner on a Holley 750, about 1/2 inch clearance. 2K is a good chunk to get it flying. Are you still running points? Do you have a sure-grip in the rear? You cant ask for a better bunch of folks for advice on FBBO. Happy Moparing.

I have a drop base air cleaner, original is on a shelf. I also have 1" spacer between the original cast intake and carb.

I'd hate to order the performer RPM and it not fit, kinda hoping someone can confirm fit.

Suregrip 3:23 but I haven't confirmed it's a suregrip, heck I haven't spun the tires yet lol. I honestly can't tell you if it's points or not. What do I look for?

I really like being able to take it out on the highway and cruise so I think I'll start with 3:55 rear.

Just to summarize so far:

750 carb
Eddy performer RPM intake or Eddy TM7
3:55 rear
Checking to see if it's 10 3/4" torque converter

Is there any value in bolting on new heads? Can I order a set ready to just bolt on?

Go to Edelbrocks web site they should have dimensions IE carb pad height. Points distributor has 1 wire electronic Mopar type has 2. If you run a Holley you will more than likely have to relocate the coil, not a big deal. Unless you are dead set on the RPM look at a Holley Street Dominator for the 383. Summits web site is also a good resource for manifold compare.

I have an Eddelbrock Performer RPM manifold and an Eddelbrock 1411 (750) on my '69 Road Runner (383) and it fits just fine. If you are still concerned, the Performer is lower for even more hood clearance.

I have 2 wires coming from the distributor, a red and black. I'm open to all suggestions as far as modifications. The Edelbrock Performer RPM intake just seemed to be the consensus internet choice.

I'm running the Performer RPM on the 383 in my Super Bee. With the factory unsilenced air cleaner I'll have to replace the element as it's just slightly rubbing the structure rib on the underside of the hood at the rear of the power bulge. You're also going to have to replace the kickdown and return spring brackets.

This is exactly why I'm here. I wouldn't have known that I will need to replace the kickdown and return spring and I appreciate the knowledge here.

I have the 2 volume factory service manual covering the 69' plymouths. I have in the past successfully replaced head gaskets and intake gaskets on newer vehicles so I can follow instructions but I don't have the experience the people here have.

I'm gonna take the suggestions I get here and put them to use, unless of course someone says put a 426 in it which I can't afford lol.

What size wheel/tire are you running? Use a tire size calculator to get the diameter and then plug it into a Engine RPM Calculator to figure your cruising RPM at the speed you're looking to hit.

If you're going to change it out the rear end, I'd look at 3.73 or 3.91...maybe even 4.10. It all depends on how much you're going to be on the highway and how fast you cruise. For example, a 275/60/15 tire with a 4.10 gear can cruise at 60MPH at a little over 3,000 RPM.

Just something to consider.

If you have reservations about the Eddy RPM, get the wieand dual plane. And don't forget a new valley pan with the heat crossovers blocked off.
