I want to put a 472 crate Hemi in this 68 Charger I am working on. When I go on line to look for info there is plenty of information about the bad parts and poor quality of the engines from 10 years ago. Supposedly a place in Kentucky is now making them for Mopar Performance. Has anyone bought one in the last 3 years and how does it run? The part number is p5249666AE. Monicatti -K & S Performance seems to have the best price. Thanks in advance for any info.

Not lately,Bought a Mopar 472 crate had a tag that it was build by Cummins attached to the block.Ran great was a power house. That was in 2006.Since then they have had several companies building them including Ray Barton.

I have read a lot of issues with the cummins built crate Hemi's. Go to a reputable builder for a crate motor.

All the Cummins built crate-hemi engines I saw....needed attention. All kinds of goofy and various issues.

Well this is a timely post, I bought a 572 crate hemi for the challenger. installed it and tried to fire it up and there was some issues. so I pulled it took it to tim banning (forhemiesonly) and when he took it apart it was the worst one he has seen yet, unbelievable is what he said, here is some pics.

his e mail to me. im pissed.
Hi Bruce, sorry to ruin your vacation. Not positive, but guessing the hard cranking is lifter related, as all of them are collapsed, which makes the cam timing really short. Builds a ton of cylinder pressure. That is the least of your problems however. Not completely through this thing yet, but this engine was not going to survive very long. The quality of parts is atrocious, but check out the pictures. If you recall, I asked how could the connecting rods clear the oil pickup with this long a stroke without major mods to the pickup. Answer. Grind the connecting rod and bolt down to the point of guaranteed failure for clearance. In all the years in business, I have never seen a butcher job like this. The whole rotating assembly is out dated. As I stated, Chrysler uses parts on the shelf, rarely the correct parts. This thing is still using stock Hemi rod journals and short rods, the exact opposite of what you want. The lower cylinder bores were never correctly prepped. Sharp edges, and with pistons hanging out the bottom of the bores at BDC, it causes the skirts to be “shaved”. Deep gouges on all skirts. Combination of long stroke, short rod, too much skirt exposed at BDC, and poor cylinder prep. Rod bearings are hanging up on the crank journal fillets as well. Have not got the crank out to see the mains, but quite a bit of end play. Cam bearings look like they were initially too tight. We will have to completely redesign this thing, or it may be advantageous to get warranty. I was expecting problems, but this is beyond compare. Would love to know what shop would build something like this in good conscience. Tim@FHO

Hey corunna, I feel for you. I purchased a "crate" 472 hemi from a supposed builder in the northeast and had a list of issues also, ended going completely through the engine. I'm curious as to who built your engine. Sucks to spend that kind of money and end up with a pile of parts.

Hashmaker, give me a call and I can tell you a builder to avoid. As far as the MP crate engines, it seems like a 50/50 shot on the quality from the people that I know that have bought them.

Wow... that's enough to make me think slant 6!!
Bouchillon (BPE) said they haven't had any trouble with them, said Cummins was making them in Kentucky, is that Cummins the "diesel" Cummins?
I appreciate the feedback everyone, Outlaw I'll be in touch.

I have heard of dozens of horror stories. Find a good builder like Tim,or Bob or one of the many builders with a great MOPAR reputation and build one.DO NOT buy a crate!!!

California friend bought a 528 Crate Hemi from back East. Put it in his 69 Road Runner. Called me and said, "This don't run like a 528 Hemi should, and no oil pressure at idle. Fix it!" Rocker shafts were installed upside down. The oil return passages between the block and heads were so mismatched there were quarts of oil collecting under the valve covers. Seven pistons were scored on the cam side of the block. The only reason the other wasn't scored was the stud in the cam valley next to that piston had pulled the threads out of the cylinder head and was loose in the valley. They had honed the bores without using a torque plate, then bolted the heads on and pulled the bores out of round. The pushrods were rubbing against the valley wall so badly they were actually wearing grooves in the pushrods.

F’n WOW!

I know this is of little consolation, but you have one of the best Hemi guys in the business taking care of you now. Even if he has to start from scratch you can bet that your engine will run like scalded dog for years to come.

Mustn't there be people out there who haven't had problems? We won't hate you if more than just one of you speaks up.

Yes I agree, Tim is the man for sure, just cant believe someone knowingly sent that garbage out the door.

I know quite a few people who bought or built 700-800 HP Hemis strictly for bragging rights. They rarely race them or get into the pedal. It's more important to them how it sounds at idle. So the question becomes how long can some of those poorly assembled engines last under those limited conditions. Ignorance is bliss.

Just finished the 5th year on mine.My guess is 12 to 14k miles and maybe 20 passes a year. It's a blown 545 megablock with stock 68 or 69 heads.I am happy with 800 to the rear on pump gas:D

I purchased my 472 crate Hemi in 2001 and put a Keisler TKO set up behind it. Other than very high oil pressure it ran great. Got over 70,000 street miles . I pulled it to paint convertible and sent it to Todd at Competition Wedge Racing after Dwayne Porter spec'd a cam for me. I know I'm lucky to have gotten that much out the crate. Todd did a great job dissecting the motor and fixing a couple of issues but told me I had perhaps another few thousand miles before the bearings would have been toast. He recommended a few parts after I told him what I wanted from the engine and he more than delivered.

Mine is sitting pretty in the coop. Never been started yet. Not really a crate motor, it was built by Mopar Vaughn for a friend. I bought it from him. But I can tell you this, there is only one person going to start that thing the first time, (should he still be alive) And that's some guy out in Challis, Montana or Idaho, can't remember which right now. But I think his name is Jim or Cody or something like that.
