Cooling Air Flow Question (2 part)

I wish I could say that! Half of the flow through air I get goes around the radiator and down over the front tires! I am working on correcting it.

Does your car stay cool during idle and at low speeds? Here's one consideration I've mentioned on other posts. Electric fans run at a constant speed unlike a belt driven fan. So let's say the your present CFM rating is equal to X MPH. Once you exceed that X MPH, the air flow through the radiator is greater than the fans capacity. The fans have become useless at that point and could actually be blocking the air flow. Another issue, as you have already discussed, is the flow direction. Some aftermarket shrouds set very close to the radiator, too close. At speed, a tight shroud will restrict the air flow. That's why some have flaps to allow for greater flow at higher speeds. It's all about finding the right combination. Good luck to you.

I disagree somewhat from field testing the fans are on a thermostat and turn off once the temps have dropped especially at higher speeds air would by nature cool the coolant down shutting the fans off once the temps reach the set point. the only hindrance is if the fans are not on a stat and run constantly i have found that overheating even with wind blowing freely through the coees is due to wrong timing and or idle mixture settings.

I will add that when I added the shroud which I had to use and switch the fans to pushers. When I thought it was an issue,,,,,,,I swiss cheesed the shroud with no difference:BangHead:

I am not even sure that I am who I am anymore. In retrospect, by the time I got to road test the beast, the hot weather was over! To answer the question of does the car stay cool at idle and low speed, yes and no! If it's cool outside it does a much better job staying cool. When those new fans kick in at idle, the voltmeter takes a nose dive, even with the new 95 amp alternator. I took the last drive of the season (before the snow salting), on Nov. 23rd. The fans never ran while in motion, just while idling at a light and then only one. That shut off as I got down the road a piece. That said, nothing to this point is definite or etched in stone. It's a work in progress, still! Thanks for the good luck Shorthorse. I agree with you also Bigman. I still have not ever even checked the timing and /or total timing either. It don't ping but there is a question mark there as well. I judged the mixture by the color inside of the tailpipes. I am also a member of the swiss cheese shroud club there Hemi-itis, found it indigestible also. I re-started my continuing quest for answers (mentioned in entry 61, above) on Oct. 18th, in the 71 to 74 Mopar forum titled "1973 -74 Satellite / Road Runner - What am I Missing". It turns out much more than I ever knew. To save weight for drag racing they neatly cut out a lot of stuff in the front end. See the pics there if interested. I just hope that they didn't acid dip the floor pan causing the seat to drop onto the ground while cruising down the road, Lol ! Like Gomer used to say; Surprise, surprise, surprise ! I just want to thank every one once again for all the help and suggestions, it is greatly appreciated! Some day I might find out that I am also a clone!

I reported you to admin.....for being too much of a badass :p
On Long Island, there are cruse nights every night of the week and car shows Saturday & Sunday with lots of choices where to go depending on where you are.

Coney Island in Brooklyn is about a 35 mile drive with traffic on the belt.

Hemi, Your car is one of the nastiest I have ever seen on the street. I guess black IS beautiful! YOU are the reason there is no drag strip on Long Island! Your ride scares the hell outta people. I once had a 65 Belvidere, just a mere 383 4spd with a 410 posi. I wish I still had it. Thanks for posting the videos, awesome!!
Bigman, how is yours coming, back from the body shop yet? The last I read you were looking for replacement handles for your pistol grip. I was going to suggest carving your own from wood. Hope all is well with you also. Looking forward to you updating your photo garage. Keep us posted! Thanx again to y'all !
