I have a 727 transmission and it was painted at some time before. I blasted the crusty black paint off and no I'm trying to decide if I want to paint it, clear coat it or just leave it alone while I have it out.
Has anyone ever painted or clear coated their transmission before? If so, since it's aluminum, what type of paint or clear coat did you use?

I painted mine to match the car with perfect match by duplicolor. I used to use krylon aluminum when I built them for others.

The case of a tranny is in itself a huge heat sink and should never be coated with paint etc.

Gotcha. So just clean it up and leave it aluminum? I have seen some that were painted before and just didn't know if the factory painted them or if they were after market painted.

I use a light coat of Eastwood Spray Grey on the ones I do....Looks like bare aluminum when done..

Plenty of painted ones out there. I've done them black and silver. Never had a heat issue.

I've heard that as well over the years but with extra capacity pans and external coolers, i have never had any heat issues with any of my painted transmissions.

Powder-coated mine in a champagne color/clear. The color varies according to the lighting.

Just use a compatible primer for aluminium and paint any colour you like

I use Eastwood's Aluma Blast paint on all of my aluminum trans housings. Never had any heat or peeling issues with them. even used it on the heads and water pump on my 6.1. No heating issues or peeling yet.

@RT K_line , I see you have disagreed with me. Was just curious if it was: A) that I've heard the same thing (see above) over the years, B) I've run extra capacity pans and external coolers (on my transmissions), C) I have never had any heat issues with any of my painted transmissions or D) all of the above. Cheers.

Sorry , big fingers hit the wrong thing. I also have always painted the units I've built in the past and never had an issue.

That's what I thought. No worries. Earlier tonight (on FABO) I received a disagree alert for a post from 2008 that of course, had been closed for years. I contacted the member and asked about it and he said he had no idea. I thought the same thing was possibly happening here. Cheers.

I paint all the ones I do, some 2 stage, some not. Never a issue yet.

What if you decide not to paint? Anything out there to keep the aluminum from corroding. (Turning white)

I paint them all the time I've never had one get hot. I did my first car 15-16 years ago and when I pulled the motor out I cleaned the trans and RE installed it was just fine now most everything I do is stock ish nothing over 450HP ever
