oil pickup install,is there anything needed on the threads? or just dry?

I use Permatex 3-H sealer. I want to insure that it's sealed.

what is that ?? couldn't find any info on 3h sealer?

Sorry,
That's what is used to be called. It's now called Form-A-Seal, part #765-1210. It's gooey stuff in a plastic container with a brush attached inside the top. NAPA carries it. Works on any gasket or threaded fitting.

The pickup is pipe thread, which is retained by and seals by the friction of the threads. You want to be careful because use of a sealer in that position can cause problems leading to the pickup backing out slightly because of a lack of friction, causing a suction leak. It can't come out, but it can back off. So mine go in dry and are only turned clockwise to align it with the pan. I use liquid teflon sealant on the other NPT oil galley plugs.

so no one asked, so i will....Is this an OE pick up tube?

i bought a 440 source pick up last year, trying to save a couple of bucks, but it was a POS, and was horribly poor product.

the treads were not cut pipe style, and it threaded in all the way, no friction at the end like it should.

ended up buying the correct Milodon PU, install went perfect after that.

millidon pickup..

good choice. as stated, you should be able to get it snug, and then as it is tightened and centered properly without any sealant. but i used a little thread locker on my build

Obviously our experiences vary. I have always used Permatex sealer on these tapered pipe threads (over 50 years now) and have never had a pick-up 'slightly back out'. That is, when a motor has been disassembled, the pick-up is still parallel with the pan bottom. To each his own...

I agree. Personally I'd never install pipe thread without any sealer. Except for brass fittings. The type of sealer depends on the application. I use loc-tite sealer on the oil pickup tube.

The factory used nothing. I use nothing. If your pipe thread is backing out you did not put it in tight enough to begin with.

How can it back out? The pick up sits so close to the bottom of the pan, it couldn't turn around if it tried.

Or am I missing something?

Didn't think so. My bb oil pick up tube is installed dry and no problems with it.

I weld mine in......JK JK but I would recommend it on a small block Shivy :D Installing it dry or using a bit of sealer isn't going to make much difference if any. If you do use a sealer, you don't need much. I've been taught that pipe threads do not make a perfect seal as no thread does without some kind of a seat or sealer. However, they are close enough for oil and I doubt you'd have a significant amount of air being sucked into the pump to notice if you didn't use a sealer.
