Hi,anybody out there running a mopar 590 cam?Looking for input for running one in the 1/8,in about a 3400 lbs. car. I thank you in advance for the help, Mark

Running one in my 451 rb. As far as the grind is concerned, its tried and true. I know that are more modern grinds available, as others will chime in, that work better. My only concern is Ma Mopar's off-shore outsourcing of their cams, quality control is at an all time low at FCA/MOPAR parts division as of late. 23 year MOPAR parts counter veteran here.

I'm pretty sure you can get a more modern cam profile to work better. If you have a builder that can talk to the "back room" guys you can surely do better. There are so many profiles that can be had, just got to know what the right one is for your combo.

i hear that comp cams grind some mopar cam profiles now.i do not know if comp stuff is off shore or not though.

That's one of them deals if you already own it then run it. If not there are more modern options out there. Will they make more power? Perhaps. My last mp cam (557) was going flat when I pulled the motor out. I went with a custom ground nitrided comp in the 511. Dwayne porter is one of those guys who can get the right thing from comp without the hassle. I believe Jim Laroy (iq52) can do the same. Contact one of those guys if you starting from scratch. Bullet is another great cam company that actually knows what they are doing.

Well I'm running the Mopar performance 312 590 cam in my street car mine was awesome now I believe I have the original grinds or old school ones from back in the day I believe and I've got a second one I keep with lifters and I've never had a problem I have a second time I run in the motor and I love them that's just me the other people going to say you're crazy with all the new grinds out there everything look at your car you choose what's best for you and what you feel you want from your vehicle a lot of people say you can't do this you can't do that on the street horse crap you can there's a lot more you can do them what they want to say I've got a lot of combination experimentation and I've got it pretty close right now with my setup Special A Streetcar the car was pretty darn good

thanks for the reply's,I have a 590 cam sitting on the shelf with lifters and a brand new set of stage six heads, old stuff for sure.Last year's engine is wore out and due to some set backs money is tight.I want to to run the car,so some real world input.Car has 4200 stall converter,5:13 spool, ladder bar rear, getting a freak ride front end this winter, and a trans brake, Mark

Last .590 motor I did. Stock rod, 12-1 Ross pistons, torquer 2, 850 Holley, cheap headers, Eddy heads. Ran 10.90@123 in a stock 69 GTX with a 4.56 and a decent converter.

I've just blown my old motor i ran for 5 years, 440 RB, .590 cam, eddy heads in a Dart 3150# race ready. It went a best 10.14 at 132 and change.

Other than "running it for years" what was the cause of the failure and what failed if you don't mind?
As far as old school Mopar cams, my 71 440 in my 70 Roadrunner with a 6 bbl has a 509 Purple Stripe cam in it (was in the motor when I bought the car). It SOUNDS great and pulls hard to 6k. If I had any more low rpm torque I would start blowing the tires up in smoke again. I did change all of the hydraulic lifters, springs and retainers.

A rod bearing went at 6500 rpm, the engine had over 350 passes on it and more than exceeded my expectations considering it was a fairly mild build.

i run one in my current street ride.works great.it was about 20 years old when i installed it last year.i had lots of old race parts sitting around and built a car with them.(long story)so far at 500 plus miles no problems.as long as its set up right it should run well.just make sure all the parts power bands match.

What is the rest of your combo, heads, pistons, comp, intake, carb.. I ran JE domes, just under 13.1, MCH ported RPM's, victor int, 1050 dom, 4.56 dana, 5000 ultimate converter.

It's a great cam. I have one in a 383. 12.5:1, 2.14-1.88 906 heads. 7.03 1/8 on 10.5" slicks at 3400lbs. Factory a body leaf springs. air shocks. 5.13 gears. I'm confident the car will run 6.85-6.90 with cal tracs and 12" slicks.

Unless the "Out of the Box" new Stage VI's
are either CNC ported or worked somewhat, they will need work,
to make them perform how they are advertised,
they generally won't perform as said Out of the Box otherwise...

regardless the camshaft of choice

just a honest suggestion

good luck & Happy Moparing

maybe IQ52 will comment...

My car, 3400lb,with me in it,65 belevedere,440 030 over, venolia rods,JE pistons, single ring,Hughes cam 694 int. 702 exht.276/280-108 installed at 104,Devoak 452 max wedge ported milled 050,indy dominator manifold ported to match heads, run a 950 or 1050 dom. 4200 stall J converter, turba action rmvb, with trans brake,8 3/4 back brace strange spool axles, and disk brakes,5:13 gear,CE ladder bars,10 in. slicks. All tracks local to me are 1/8 mile, car runs 6.93- 7.00, Its takes a long time for the car to come alive, like at the end of the track, cut good light but 60 ft. is always 1.65-1.72. Cam to big for this heavy of a car?Shitty driver? The front wheels come up about 8 in.what is wrong???

car has tied frame,10 pt. rollbar, has toque boxes also, motor plate, mid plate alltied together from rad.support to rear bumper

60 foot times should be way faster. Mine is a 1.50-1.55 60' running 7.03 1/8 at best. It averages 7.10-7.20 depending on weather etc. Maybe your car is too stiff and not flexing enough to really plant the tires. Have you tried a gear change? It may be running out of breath on the big end. It seems like that setup should be good for 6.70's-6.80's
