Hi guys,

I'm looking at options for a newly acquired Charger R/T. Want to put either a fully built 440/6 or Hemi.

What would you guys say are the quality and well trusted sources? And what budget?

A 500HP wedge is a walk in the park. Way cheaper than a Hemi.

If I bought a crate engine I'd have the car ready to go. Just drop engine and fire it up. Don't want to use up warranty while you get the car ready.

I am in Dallas. So I looked into local options and found ATK. I inquired and they sent back this:

"We discontinued all of our 440’s due to blocks having so many issues with them causing rear seal leaks you cant fix and scraping out."

Is this a general challenge with Mopar big blocks?

Only if you don't know what your doing..

I don't! Which is why I'm not building it. Looking for a good crate motor and installer in DFW. Do the crate motors have this problem?

Crate motors are very hit and miss. Your better off finding a Reputable builder. It may be worth traveling a bit.

100% agree. Good reputations are earned, adds in a paper or on the internet are just that.. adds.

Stroke a 400 block.

That comp 274 cam is right in the sweet spot where the MP 284/484 used to be.

...with slightly better street manners and efficiency and maybe a bit more power.

I've seen cheap pieces of crap 440 6-BBL engines for about $7,500. A "fully built" 500 hp 6-Pack? Figure a minimum $14,000 for a good one.

Any shop that says they gave up on a motor, run far away!

Call Nickens Bros in Conroe, mopar specialist ( I think they still campaign a Prostock Dakota). When I get to that point I'm going to have them go through and set up my heads.
Heard nothing but good things, not the cheapest but I guess you get what you pay for. There are several with good reps in the Houston area that might be worth a trip or at least a call...
Faerman Engines ( Dennis) is a stand up guy and does really good work and there is also Conrad Racing Engines some love him, some hate him... Never heard anything bad about his work though.

What happened to 6-Pack? Add $3,000 for everything through air cleaner. So we are at $11,000 (and you still have old factory iron heads and stock rocker arms and a cheap hard to adjust distributor) or $14,600 for the stroker (Speed Master is the least expensive of all aftermarket parts).

These engines don't even come with carburetor, spark plugs, oil filter and oil, this means no dyno test or break in. How do you know something doesn't leak on this build? You'll want an engine tested so you don't have to hope it is right. Dyno break in time, horsepower test and tune....$550 plus oil and filters (oil and filters twice, once for break in oil and filter cut open to check for metal, second time for running oil and running filter....$120, oh yeah, and dyno fuel).

Your 440 is now at $11,670 and stroker is $15,270. And you still don't have what I consider a "fully built" engine. Reality bites.
