My car has a 3.55 suregrip 8 3/4 I just put in. I am planning to build a 470 stroker motor but in the meantime I have a basically stock 400 that just came out of a car (ran well) January 74 dated casting block - that I am considering trying to hop up a bit and put in the car while I build my 470 stroker which could take me a little time.

The 400 would have basically a 650 Edelbrock carb with a performer intake, headers, and a cam. Carb and intake can be changed if needed.

Any suggestions for a cam that would be mostly for off idle for street use for the 400? Spoke to Comp Cams and they suggested cam 21-222-4.

Thoughts?

I probably wouldn't use that intake, basically a stock intake. Is it a performer, or performer rpm?

Old school performer. I have access to a Holley Street Dominator too but heard they weren't so great.

Headers, valve springs wieand 8008, mopar 272/455 cam and a little converter will wake up any b block.

I used a performer on my first 440 in my 67 with a mild street cam and was underwhelmed with the performance. From what I understand is it's a stock intake essentially.

i went with the comp K21-600-5 ,duelplane intake and 750 and headers

i can send u a video so you can hear the idle

I think the xe262 that comp suggested would work well.

The holley street dominator is a good intake!, It's what I use.

These cam suggestions sound reasonable size. I've heard just stay small on the "overlap" for lower compression motors. You "could" get a little larger cam that you could transplant into the 470 stroker. I guess it depends on how radical a 470 you want to build and how far into the future that is. If you're planning a street'ish 470 with a "mid-sized" hydraulic cam maybe you could just buy that cam now & deal with a little less off-the-line performance in the 400 and only buy one cam???

I've been considering a Hughes Whiplash setup for the factory 400 in my '72 D100. If I do I'll get the whole kit and caboodle - cam, lifters, springs, and adj timing set.
