I just installed a set of Summit brand ceramic coated headers in my 69 road runner with a 440 engine. The headers are 1 7/8 inch primaries with 3 inch collector. The collector on the drivers side is getting close (straight into) to the underbody cross brace with the reducer on and will require a sharp elbow to complete the exhaust system on past the transmission brace. I feel this will be a restriction of flow when the elbow is installed to make the turn and was wondering if anyone has ran into this and what you did about it.

sounds like the header was designed for a low deck engine.
Supposedly, those headers are for b and RB engines in a b body.
I was wondering how that is possible.
I'm in the market for a pair of headers and I don't want to spend a grand for mild steel headers no matter who makes them.

I agree with vintage chromoly; lets see a pic if you can. I installed the same headers on my 68 charger with a 440 and didn't have a problem. Granted it's a different car but they're both b bodies and I would think that they should be pretty darn close to the same.

I always thought a dent in the header tube made a big difference in power? Watch this!

I wouldn't think there would be a difference. It might be overkill for me to think the bend will be to sharp.

Could I get of picture of what you did on the driver side where the exhaust passes around the torsion bar bracing please?

Certainly. I should be home early enough that I still have some sunlight for the pic. I'll post it later this evening.

My new headers.

Not very good pictures because the car is on the trailer and I couldn't jack it up to get underneath. New Headers 004.JPG

It can be cut some but it's still going to be a sharp bend on these 3 inch pipes. Probably will be ok...I hope.

Ok here are some pics of my set up. It does look very similar to yours. I had an exhaust shop do mine. They did have to make a little bit of a dog leg to clear but they didn't go all the way to the center where there is the most room. They only bent the pipe enough to clear. It does not bang on the frame but if you're going with a 3" pipe you may have to go a little more. I went with 2.5".

I already have ran the 3 inch system under there but with Headman headers. The Headman tubes must be shorter because I had at least another 5 inches with them. I'm going carry it to the exhaust shop Saturday and try to get something done. Thanks 68Charger440HP for the pics!!!!

Not a problem. I had also switched from Headmans. Driving to the exhaust shop with open headers is always fun! :D Be sure to show us the finished product once it's done.

Will do.

I would cut off the collector end and relocate the collector making surface back 2 inches, then get a ball type connector and the issue willbe easier to fix.

I am wondering if my muffler shop could cut the reducer and weld it back at a 45 degree angle then weld the 3 inch pipes on without having to bend them at a tight angle.
