looking into doing a 6.1 swap into my '70 charger in the near future (hopefully).

wondering if anyone has that combo and any headsup? Is it easier than going the 545 route?

I would and have considered it. From what I understand, of all the late model overdrive automatic transmissions the GM fits the trans tunnel the best. It sucks cause in the kind of guy who likes to keep my mopars all mopar, but the nag1 would be harder to fit and control. I know some guys on here have figured it out, but I dont know whats involved.

Thanks. Yeh I'd rather have all mopar but the car is already a pretty big project so if I could dodge some headaches I wouldn't mind going the 4l80e direction. Mind you some were trying to convince me to put an LS but that's definitely a no as it'll just look wrong/butchered.

So yeh please if someone has any tips on the swap do share

Hemi,
Have you considered the Gear Vendors OD? I have 2 of them and it really makes a difference. You could stay with your TF then.

I am using a well built 4L60E with my 6.1 in a 1966 Charger, easy to adapt and fits the tunnel with minimal fuss.

68.Mopar...I am going down that road as we speak to fit behind my 485 CI stroker in my 69 Coronet. I modified the hump, 1 1/2" taller and 5" wider and will have to modify tranny mount. I was a certified welder for eons so the sheetmetal work was easy for me. Go to TCI as they make a 4l80E that is a six speed and can handle about 700 ft#'s of TQ. TCI is now cutting off the bell housing on the one piece 4L80, incorporating a very stout ring with bolt holes and you purchase a Reid(I think) racing bell that just bolts to it and mates right up to a BB Chrysler. That way the spacing is correct, the starter is on the correct side for a Mopar and the odometer is electronic to match new gauges in your dash( no gears to match up). No it is not cheap but you get a stout 6 speed with a .75 OD that bolts right up and will give you the grunt for low gear fun and the over drive for comfortable gas mileage on the cross country runs.

I have the 4L60 from Silver Sport behind my 440 (TrickFlow heads and FAST EFI). Trans works great and package came with everything needed. I looked at all the options and this was the best for me. Regarding the Mopar thing, the good news is that parts don't know the difference, they're just parts. Not one person has looked under my car and came up with their heads shaking. Even if they did, I wouldn't care.

I love the cars that are completely OEM and I love cars that are custom. You just have to ask yourself 1) what is my budget and 2) what is the intended use of the car. For me, I wanted to drive the car hundreds of miles at a time, a good bit on the highway and to not beat the piss out of the drivetrain and to be able to actually enjoy the drive. Additionally, I didn't want to cut up the tunnel, nor have to deal with the NAG1 speed sensor issues, or the GV oil change and added weight.

Different strokes for different folks. For me, it was a no-brainer.

Regards,
John

I'm with you 71, the best of both worlds and since it is MY car....I can build it any way I want. There was nothing special about this Coronet except for the parts I put into it. Yes, I have the appreciation of OEM and did have a 68 Bee in HS that was ALL OEM, miss that car and all the memories I created with it. Different plans for this car and at a different time of my life so I get to play with this one. Did the Fast system go in easy and does it continue to work well for you? I am going to do a Fitech, just a different version of the same thing and still checking on different systems.

Mocajava, yes, the FAST system works like a charm, very happy with it. I've heard the same about the FI Tech system. They've all had teething problems, which is to be expected, but I haven't experienced anything negative with mine. What I like about the FAST, is that the trans has a compatible TCU. Both units have operated flawlessly.

Excellent news. I am still too far away from even being able to start putting my car together, waiting on engine. I have a tone of clean up on the small parts before I can rest but great to hear that they mesh well. Did you get an EFI tank with pump built in or go with an EFI pump mounted on frame? Any noise issues? I'm about to order from Tanks Inc for the EFI setup myself.....just wondered.

We went with a new tank and in-tank pump, with a return. You can hear the pump, but the engine does a great job of drowning out any noise. :icon_fU:

John

Sounds like your oversized right foot may have a tremendous influence on your inability to hear the pump! Awesome!

You're probably right. While I don't run it nearly as hard as our Hellcats, I'm not tender with the car.

John
