currently own a 67 satellite with a 318 w/8.75 rear.
Looking to do a 318 build/swap and not sure what years would swap out.
I want to build a hot 318 and swap out current motor.
I think current motor is a 75 and my understanding up to 2002 will swap out.
Can anybody confirm and add any recomendations as I'm new to the mopar kingdom.
Looking forward to this build!

My 2-cents. If you're gonna rebuild, do a 360. If you're budget-building....it's already got cubes, torque, and better heads going for ya. There's plenty around.

I thought my 904 trans is only good for a "hot" 318 build. I understand the 360 has same dimensions with just a motor mount change.
Convince me this is the way to go?
I just don't want to change out the whole drivetrain.

Your 904 will be fine. Many guys in the NHRA Stock classes use them behind 10 second engines. If you want, look for the 318 or 360 roller cam blocks(cheap to free) from the mid to late 80's in the LA version before the change to the Magnum blocks. That way it will look like the 67 engine you have.My 2 cents,,just a thought.

Find one out of a late 70's small-block vehicle. The HP, police, c-bodies, trucks used the A999[beefed-up 904].
Around 1980?...it got a lock-up convertor put in it. The drag-race 904-style transmissions have lots of $$ in them to go really quick. A solid/fresh rebuild will hold up to any mild small-block.

and I think the A-999 was behind 360's if I'm remembering right (or A-994?). Both Darter6 and mmissile have good ideas. A 360 is to a 318 what a 440 is to a 383. Many of the parts are the same and the swap is easy. The 360's have a longer stroke & taller block than the 318/340 motors, so intake manifolds & pushrod length is different, but just about everything else is the same. The 360's have the larger ports like the 340's and larger valves like the '72+ 340's. I seem to recall the 340's have a larger exhaust (?) valve in '68-'70 than the other heads, fyi. Your 8-3/4" rear end is perfect too. I'd go 360 all day long.

Oops... I made a mistake. It's been so long since I ran the "small motors" I forgot they're not like the B/RB motors. Also, I've never seen 2.02 intake valves on a 360 and I thought those were only available in pre-72 340's. So, only issue with the swap would be the port mis-match between the intake runners (318=small & 340/360=big). The pushrods should be the same length then.

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?!

Stop doing drugs and replying to the forum with crazy answers!!!!!!

Pay no attention to this person.
WAKO ALERT!!!!

Sorry brother, gotta rip this apart...

This area is a little grey for me. FOR ME, all the transmissions are ether a 727 or a 904. While there are several subdivisions of the 904, there all 904's to me. The 999 has a low gear set, slightly different on the internals. More beef is what I would call it. I'm not up on auto transmissions since I like manuals andrun them. My auto trans cars are handled by a pro. Not me.

Longer stroke? YES! Taller block? WTF are you taking about?!?!?!?! The difference in a 360 vs 340 block is where the crank sits and the size of the cylinder bore. END! THATS IT! DONE! GOOD NIGHT ALICE!

This means, and I have so done these swaps over and over again it can be done with the flu and hung over while not being sure which end I should have over the toliet bowl!

INTAKES interchange on all "LA" engines except the early 273. 2bbl., 4bbl. 6 pack, aftermarket units, they all swap! The aftermarket makes a port size on these intakes that range from the smaller 273/318 to the larger 340/360 as well as an inbetween size designed to make a general use for all heads of the larger size window since the windows slightly change in sizes. The window is smaller on the intakes. (Weiands for example.)

PUSHRODS, when you are changing cams and valve trains and milling heads, block decks, should be checked for proper lengths. This also should be done with aftermarket lifters. While the stock length will propbably work across the board without any big issue, double check. Hyd. pushrods have a different length than mechanical cam pushrods. And a different length on roller cam engines.

I seem to recall the 340's have a larger exhaust (?) valve in '68-'70 than the other heads, fyi.

All small block heads come in like this on the valves.

273/318, small valve. 1.78/1.50 Later 4bbl. 318, 1.88/1.60 (360 headed)
340/ 2.02/1.60, late 1972-1973, 1.88 intake valve
360/ I have only seen 1.88/1.60 valves. I have been told and read the early 360 did/could receive a 2.02 intake.

FWIW!!!!!

A 318 can use a 2.02 in a stock bore.
360's can use a 2.05 intake valve in a stock bore.

Just had to get that out there as well. Just a "FWIW, FYI."
