bought a new open box msd dist at a swap meet , going to install it and thought id do some research, box says its a 440 dist msd 8387, but if i go to msd website it looks more like the 383-400 list pictured 8386 by the way the cap has external screws. even if it is a 8386 will it work in the 440??? it physically fits in the hole, appears to engage the drive ,, but are the lengths the same , i don't have a 440 dist to compare it to ...

As far as I know, the shaft length is longer on RB's.

Measured from mounting surface to end of distributor shaft.

Mopar B engine – 3.5″

Mopar RB engine – 4″

At one time Mopar Performance had sold a adapter to run a RB in a B.

If it is for an RB you'll need the adapter to raise it up! 440 shaft is longer! From the pic. it looks like a 383 style dist.

Hole in block is the same for both, shaft length is not..

everything but the shaft is the same.

a RB dist into a B is posible with adapters available around ( spacers )

not the other way around though

maybe a custom piece/adapter could be made to enlarge the shaft lenght though. I think is posible fairly easy
