What is the difference between a early box and the later boxes? Can the later steering box be used with the 64-65 suspension? 1965 Coronet 500

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but the later boxes use a larger sector shaft so the correct pitman arm must be used. The matching idler arm on the other side needs to be used in that case as well. The newer box should bolt up. not sure what year the sizes changed. If converting from power to manual the column is longer as well. Adapters can be bought for this.

So if I got the later steering box with the pitman arm together then would it bolt up? No problem with the center link or steering shaft? Would the different pitman and idler arms create any interference issues like exhaust or oil pan? The car is set up for manual steering but it did not have a K member or front suspension. I got all that from a 65 Coronet donor car but it had power steering.
From what I have seen the small shaft are pre-66 and and the larger shaft 66 and up. I cannot find an early steering box new, rebuilt, or used in good condition. I would like to have the stock steering ratio.

I have a 69 box on my 63 fury the pitman arm from the stock power box worked just fine every thing fit perfect

Oh, OK I still have the pitman arm off the 65 power steering box. Might have to try that.

i think the difference is the coupler. the later stuff uses a larger coupler and steering column shaft.

So are the pitman arms the same? Early/Later? It's just the where the steering shaft connects and that's it?

I converted the other way from manual to power and I just left the pitman arm in place and unbolted the box and swapped them. Put my pinion arm back on.Then I popped the steering wheel and slid the manual shaft out and the power one in. Had to cut the coupler pin off to get it out and it was easy to reassemble. check the shaft size before you get to far into it. If they are the same it will be a simple swap.

So......... What is needed to convert from a small shaft to a large shaft steering box?
