So I pulled my radiator from my 70 Charger to have it reconditioned and the dude at the radiator shop asked if I have a 383, I told him no it's a 440 but the car had a 383 stock that the last owner replaced with a 440. He talked me out of having it reconditioned and now I'm in the market for a 3 row radiator. When I bought the car the fan shroud was in the trunk and I was going to attempt to reinstall it when I put the radiator back in but now I'm seeing that a lot of the replacements are warning that the factory shroud may not work. Is this an issue? Can anyone point me in the direction of a good factory replacement radiator that won't cost me an arm and a leg? The links below are 2 of the ones I was looking at.

I don't have too much experience with them but it seems you can almost count on some type of tweaking or fabricating with any aftermarket radiator you're going to install, wether its fan shroud or drilling new bolt holes.
This is who I'm going with if you want to check them out.

This is who I bought mine from too. Haven't installed it yet so I can't rate it except it's all welded with no epoxy. They claim that the larger two row tubes cool better than any three row. And it's affordable! Also has a nice, outside the core, edge for mounting a shroud without shooting screws though a core.

Check your measurements against their drawings for the best match and hose locations.

I got mine all measured up compared to their diagrams should bolt right in...but I'm not holding my breath.

Do you have a cooling issue with the radiator you pulled out of your '70? I'm assuming it was a 22".

Dan

I'm not sure if it's a 22 or 26, I'm not at home right now so I can't go measure it but I think it's a 22. And the only cooling issues I've had were when the lower hose sprung a leak. After I went through all the headaches of getting a new hose on there I figured I'd pull it out and get it reconditioned and put the shroud back on when I put the radiator back in.

IF everything is working right, and you don't have A/C (or a 4-speed), then a 22" would work just fine. But most times not everything is working perfectly and a 26" gets you a bit more margin. On my '68 383 4-bbl 4-spd I have the factory correct 22". The gentleman I bought if from was using it with his 440. In Florida. Worked just fine for him.

I have a 26 in my 440. When I restored the car I had the radiator triple cored. Fan shroud went back on just fine. I don't have the clearance I used to - but it's enough for it to work just fine.

Done

Why where you talked out of a re-core?

If it was working for you, I'd just re-core it and install the shroud. It may not even need a re-core, just a good flush.

I have a 22" with an added shroud on my 383 and have no problems with it.

If the tanks are in good shape, no cracks or weak spots, then it may only need boiled and rodded to clean out any crap in the core. If its got bent fins, and you want to have it recored, go for it, unless they can comb it out!
