Hi, Nice interesting project that was brought to me. Guy has a '63 "I think" 330 max wedge 426. He wants manual rack and pinion steering added along with the rebuild of the engine. I've been searching to no avail. I'm sure someone has done it before now. Any insight on what this is gonna involve? Thanks in advance. Gonna try to attach a pic of the car.
She's a beauty.

How about referring him to someone with the background to perform the work he is looking for.

Rack and pinion steering on that is tough without changing the k member to a tubular style. Unisteer makes a bolt on deal but there are some clearance issue with it.

If that is an original Max Wedge car,it would be better left as is !!

Unisteer seems to be the only company close to having a kit. The k member may get changed. Thanks

Original..... no. Maybe the intake and exhaust manifolds are oem, but the carbs, distributor, carb linkage, fuel lines are not. Do the heads have freeze plugs on the ends? If they do they are not oem max wedge. For quick ref the front of the block on drivers side will have aaqa stamping on it.
Why does the guy want rack n pinion steering? Its not going to be that much different than whats on there now, other than the potential for bumpsteer is increased

He wants the slack in the steering out. I just learned this tonight after talking to him tonight. My thoughts are I can upgrade the box.

I'll check for freeze plugs and markings.

Sorry, that's not a max wedge intake. Note the position of the carburetors...

Coloradodave is correct, that intake doesnt look to be oem, might be an edelbrock str type, which is a cross ram style manifold.
The heads are the 4 bolt, probably 286 casting stage I / II head. You'd have to remove the drivers side rocker arm cover to confirm.
You might be able to take up some of the slack on the steering box by adjusting the set screw on the top. If that doesnt work it might be time to send to firm feel for a rebuild

You are prolly right. After looking at some of the images online, that str intake lines up. We pulling the engine tomorrow. Pretty sure it has a spun bearing. Prolly a clone.

Help me out here aren't the 4 bolt and 6 bolt valve covers interchangeable.
A 6 bolt will fit on a 4 bolt head and vice-versa.
If so the number of holes in the cover does not tell you the casting numbers.
I could be just having a senior moment if please excuse me.
