Time to Ditch The Edelbrock!

I used to run Carters exclusively and i have never had serious issues with them until i wanted big power. For me, it just came down to the preference of tuning strategy. And i ended up liking the Holley more.

If a tuner is comfortable with a product and is successful with it, stick with it.

don't let the internet fool you. i've been playing with carbs since 1968. ran a lot of holley stuff thru the years and there not any better than anything else. i call it the holley hoax.
My carb is a mystery to me. I thought I understood how to tune and set it but every time I do I shake my head and go back to square one. Currently I'm trying to diagnose a low throttle hesitation/surge that I think is caused by the step up spring. I think my lowing vacuum is causing the piston to bounce on the spring.

My other issue is with my choke on startup. I cant seem to get it to work correctly. I thought I had my fast idle set but when I start the car it revs up to around 1000 then falls down and dies.

All of this makes me want a FiTech EFI.

That surge could be your squirters hosing down you intake with un atomized fuel that wont burn. I had this issue with my farm truck racer...Thompson power blast plate fixed that.

I plan to run through each set of springs till I feel it go away. Just getting the time to do this is the problem for me.

i don't use large squirters. the pamphlet tells you the spring ratings. then all you need is a vacuum reading. same issue would happen with a holley so just fix what you have.

I have to be honest, all this is why I'm considering a change to EFI... I don't have the knowledge or time to get a carb running 100%. Tuneable EFI I can do, did it on the last car. It just a shame because I really want to keep this traditional.

What holley are you guys using straight off the shelf for a stock 383. I am running a used Edelbrock so it may not be right any way.

Wow, you guys make me want to get rid of my Eddy as well...
Yeah, this thread is a bit concerning, but so far my Eddy hasn't caused me any problems. It is simple and I understand it (after going through the manual 3 or 4 times :) ). So until it does, I'm going to take this thread with a grain of salt. Sounds like oil, wine, cigars and women. Everyone has their favorites. I have no favorites, and at the same time, I have no dislikes..............................in carbs that is.

Throwing my 750 edelbogg in the trash as well, came with the car and have had nothing but trouble with it, pain in the *** with the newer fuel with ethanol in it, boil the fuel, and gets hard to start when sitting for 10 minutes.
Will use a qf850 dp instead. have tried a holley 850 dp, and what a difference at wot.
I tune my carbs with 02 sensor.
Edelbrock's aren't meant for ethanol.
As a matter of fact, no carbureted cars are.

Holleys tolerate the ethanol a bit better from my experience as does an aluminum intake. My stock mopars both two and 4 barrel have hard start issues when hot all due to boil off. I have just learned to live with it.

The problem with the efi is that when you do have problems they are even harder to diagnose typically. Ever lose a number one injector driver? Intermittently? Ever have iac issues? They all have ups a downs but people logged thousands of miles with points flat tappet cams and carburetors so....

Thats my point, holley style carbs do not boil the gas as easy as the edelbrock style carbs, with todays crappy fuel that has ethanol in it

There is nothing particularly wrong with the Eddy carb. Something is overlooked and it's a stupid problem. One of those problems is the floats must be properly lined up side to side or they will hang up on the side of the fuel bowl. Eddy carb float height is 7/16" and also pay attention to the float drop (don't recall the dimension but it's in the book). 1" maybe? Anyway, look that up and adjust as required.

You are alive !!!

I have a question. These are the needles and seats I bought. The ones I have now have no clips like the ones shown in the pics. Are these supposed to be on them? It looks like they clip to the end of the needle and fit into the groove on the top of the seat?

First part yes, second no.
Those wire clips go onto the groove on the needles, and the 'bent end' over the float arm. The wire clips simply 'force' the needles to move with the floats, moving up, or down. If the clips are not used, the needles will do nothing, but stay closed!

Add that the float/needle/seat needs to be assembled, and in place, before you adjust the float height/drop.

The clips are the needle pull down. The seat barrel ID is the guide. The float lifts the needle up into the seat. IMO, If you have too much float drop combined with no pull down clip maybe the needle falls down too far in the barrel and cocks.
Before you install the seats take a good look at the carb top to make sure you don't have a crack causing your problem.
Since you can post pictures why don't you past some? One with the floats set and needles seated(turn the cab top over). One with the floats hanging down.
Also post one of the carb bottom looking into it from the front.

Interesting. Those were not on the needles when I opened the carb the first time.

For a 750 vac. secondary carb I like the QF Slayer series. That said I'd just put a new fuel filter and needle/seat on the AFB and call it a day.

'wsutard'-- is ur choke pull-off working??
