I have helped out people before but I have never picked up a hitch hiker. I was thinking about a story I was told several years ago....
This guy Mike that I know told me about this time he and a friend of his were in his car when it conked out about 10 miles from home. They decided to walk. About 2 miles later they decided to hitch hike. A van stopped and the guy let them in. Mike got in the back even though there was no seat. His friend sat in the right front seat. They chatted with the driver and thought all was well. As they got close to Mikes house, Mike thanked the guy a few times and asked if he wanted some gas money. The driver looked at the front seat passenger and said....."Well, if one of you guys let me BLOW you, we can call it even."
Mike started laughing, thinking that the guy was kidding around. They had a few laughs in the short trip, so Mike just thought it was a joke. The front seat passenger knew the guy was serious though.
He said to the driver..."Stop the van. STOP the van!" Mikes laughter trailed off and turned to What the ****?
The man pulled over and the guys walked the rest of the way.
That story cracks me up just thinking about that moment when Mikes laugh turned serious....and uncomfortable.

only if their female and good looking , even have to watch out for them these days (who's hiding in the bushes) . basically no

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a hitch hiker.

The last hitchhikers I picked up slashed my car seats with a knife to thank me. The police wouldn't arrest the one I grabbed before he could run away (they never said why). I sued that guy and got restitution. I asked him why he cut the seats and he blamed his "crazy friend".

I only pick up people if I see they need help, like there's a stopped car and a guy walking away with a gas can.

Often I will, but I live so far out that usually people are trying to hitch hike the other direction. Plus I look scary enough that most wouldn't want to get in the vehicle I'd wager. But I've told my wife to never pick up hitch hikers. It's not safe for women at all in my opinion. And if I pull up to a stranded woman, I'll offer my phone and only if they specifically ask for a ride, will I give them one. But I'm also usually armed, so there's that too.

There is one guy that hitch hikes a lot and I will often stop and pick him up. There was one guy that obviously was high. I stopped to pick him up and I asked where he was headed. He said I could drop him off in the town I had come from. I told him he had been walking the wrong way and I was south bound. Took me a bit to convince him he was walking the wrong direction.

Still all due caution these days, but I've been helped out many times so I try to keep that in mind.

Hitchhikers no? They choose their mode of transportation why change it.
I will stop and offer assistance to someone stranded and in some states that is the law if the situation feels safe. Other wise call motorist assist which most states have and report the situation that is what they get paid to do.

And I might consider that only if I'm not alone in my car. Because.
There are lots of variables. If it was a female I might be concerned about false accusations they could make about me.
With the ubiquitous cell phone helping stranded motorist is a judgment call now.

Trust no strangers.

Not any more, I have to many people that depend on me and I think the risk outweighs the chance of actually helping a normal person, except a neighbor or someone you know that's stalled on the road or a little old lady/children. To damn many zombies out there.

Sorry but a very bad move. Regardless of the circumstances never ever pick up hitch hikers or hitchhike yourself. Bad JuJu all the way around...cr8crshr/Tuck:realcrazy::realcrazy::realcrazy::usflag::usflag::usflag:

not since the late 70's
NO
"maybe" if someone in obvious trouble on the side of the road
otherwise hell no

No one gets in my car. Unless there's a obvious reason that I can see. Flat tire no spair no gas ect or in most cases I pick up hot rod car guys that brake down and need parts or tools witch I keep all basic tools in my truck . Plus fluids and hoses clamps stuff like that as I'm kinda the on call mechanic for my car club and now most hot rodders in the area in a bind if I can't fix it there I always have a chain or a trailer close by .

This.

I do stop and help people change a flat, but I can't pickup hitch hikers. I have 3 little kids that need a daddy, and I ain't going out like that.
