Anybody Install Their Own Windshield? 70 Road Runner

Be careful on the upper corners. Juuust when you are almost there... you hear "bink". Don't ask me how I know. or how many times.

And it is surprisingly cheap. I expected it to be terribly expensive, but if I remember correctly, I got off for less than $300 installed. Now the rear window might be another story.

Rear window is held in with butyl tape, no gasket. Just prime the opening and the glass, stick tape to opening, stick glass to butyl.

Correct and understood. My point was that the rear glass, because of it's shape (on the '69) is very expensive, so I was told.

Oh, I got ya! AMD repops the rear glass for $359

Pay someone else to do it. :D

I know, but it's the rust repair in the window channel that's holding me back on paying someone else. I don't want to drop a grand & lose a month in a body shop. Safe-Lite is convenient, but they don't do rust repairs. If I get in a pickle, I will call in the professionals.

My Buddy and I did the install on the 68. Used the old rope trick and lots of lube. Not that big of a deal. Now hopefully in dont leak. I live close to Trifer glass that GYC use. I guess if it gets a crack from a rock or whatever I will use them and bill Hagarty. Oh yeah old glass new gasket.

Here is a good link to a photo step by step on replacement/installation.

Ive done about a dozen or so install on various cars. If you take your time and second set of hands you should be good.

I just did the Charger. It goes in the same way.
Except the factory manual said to start at the top, which didn't make sense.
Start at the bottom. I should have known better.
I started at the top and it was a screw up. Wound up fighting the bottom against gravity.

That link doesn't say. They may have used polyurethane that sets up in the lower channel.
I did not see it.
I though about it.
But if I did that, the windshield gasket would be in there for good.
Maybe not a bad thing.
I have put A body gaskets in with it all the way around.

It's nice because I have been able to change a windshield without the gasket moving.
But on the Charger I was worried about what if I had to take the thing back out.
So I used gobs of 3M 8509.
No way I would reuse a 30 year old gasket for this.
They shrink up after you take them out and they sit around a while.
They need to be pliable too.

I just did my two ragtops , the 68 R /T was new windshield and new gasket , the 69 R/T was new glass and old gasket. I broke the old windshield to save the gasket , got a good deal on a pair delivered. I used Gunk windshield cleaner as a lube and bought a set of plastic scrapers at Wal-mart. The old gasket was smooth sailing but the new one was stiffer and couldn't quite tuck in the two upper corners locking strip ,wait for a real hot day, cuz the soaking in hot water cools down real fast. It can be done, take your time and lotsa patience and lube. I got a good deal on two windshields and it was my first time, the windshield guy wanted $800 each , you Can do it.

If i remember correctly , the ideal tool was a plastic paint edger that i trimmed for the task, i bought it at walmart in the paint section along with the plastic scappers.
