Well, I knew I fixed my brake issues because the transmission decided to **** the bed. My moments of joy in being able to drive my 74 Roadrunner were brief to say the least. There is a guy selling a rebuilt 727A that he'll make into a 727B using my trans, but I was thinking that maybe before I do that I should consider going to something different.

The car has a 440, console shifter, and 8.75 rear. Is there a newer trans with overdrive capability that I might want to consider?

No. I wish that there was.

Gear Vendor OD + Cope Racing Transmissions = :0)

Automatic? Gear vendors are probably the least intrusive but bolt to your existing 727 so you still need it.

Here's some motivation hehe.... This is with 1 gear left to go (3:55s)!

What's yours doing?

There are a few different options you have. You could go the adapter plate route and use a new dodge tranny like a 46re or you can go the Chevy route and have a complete bolt-in "no cutting required" fit with the 4L65E. The newer 4L60E and 65's have a removable bellhousing like manuals do. So all you do is go to Quicktime and get a bellhousing for your application. One of the benefits of the 4l65e is the super low 1st gear and the .70 overdrive. You can also go to the beefy 4L80E but you would have to cut the floor to make it fit. It all depends on how you feel about having chevy parts on your mopar. I personally dislike chevy, buuuuttttt I have a 4L60E in my 71 charger. It's kinda sad that its easier to adapt a chevy trans than it is a mopar trans to our cars.

It's been acting flaky for a while. We went out to dinner Tuesday night and we were at a stop, on a hill, and when the light turned green I accelerated and the car went nowhere for a second and then the car jumped into gear. I thought the fluid might be low, so I put a quart in and we got to the restaurant with no more problems. After dinner we went to Publix and the car drove fine there.

Leaving Publix, the car was fine until we went to cross a major intersection and the trans decided to start working intermittently. I would have power, then no. I would give the engine some gas, and as the RPMs dropped back down the trans would go back into gear for a little while and I could get the car moving in first gear but that's all I was getting. It would stay in gear for about five seconds and then drop back out and I would have to repeat the cycle of revving the engine and getting another burst of movement.

We got to the hill that leads to our house and coasted down it, and when we got to the bottom the trick with the engine RPMs quit working and I thought we were walking, but then first gear started working and we made it the last quarter mile with some stable power. I checked the fluid level yesterday and it was fine, but the trans is now doing nothing. I can shift it, but the car isn't moving and I can't feel the trans engaging. It feels like there's no fluid moving.

So what are all the "oh, by the way..." items with this? It looks like there are a lot of 4L60E units available, but what about the trans lines, speedo cable, rear trans mount/crossmember, shifter/kickdown connections, etc? What all do I need for a out-the-door solution?

Not to hijack your thread but whatever happened to keisler? They used to build aftermarket over drive trans for mopar

Silversport Transmissions has a complete kit but you'll pay around $5000 for it. It's everything from the back of the motor to the rear axle. I built my own.
Crossmember - I built my own.

Speedo - If you want to use your mechanical speedo, there is an adapter you can use or you can switch to an electronic speedo.
kickdown - modern transmission do not use kickdowns. It is all computer controlled.
Trans lines - you would have to make your own. For now I just have rubber lines on mine.
Shifter - If you have a slapstick you can get a kit to convert it to the chevy trans and just us a shifter cable instead of the links.

Driveshaft- have one made.
Controller - Im using a microsquirt trans controller. It's fully programmable via a laptop (shift points, line pressure, lockup, etc.
Quicktime bellhousing - big block mopar to 4l60e
Flexplate - This was the biggest issue I had with the whole conversion. I had to modify a quicktime flexplate to get it to bolt up. I also had to use a spacer. I think I ordered the wrong flexplate but I was able to make it work.
Torque convertor and trans - If you get the quicktime bellhousing, you have to use a 4L65E trans. the bellhousing is listed as a 4L60e bellhousing but It will not work. Trust me. I found out the hard way. When Chevy switched from the vortec to the LS motors, they changed the torque convertor and input shaft along with some other beefier internals in the trans. I had to get my input shaft and torque convertor switch over to make it work.

All in all, I have roughly between $2000 - $2500 in the conversion. It was definitely harder researching and sourcing all of the parts I need but in the long run, I think it was worth it. If you want a bolt kit and not have to search for this and that, I would just buy Silversports kit. I think they have a list of all the parts on their website. https://shiftsst.com/articles/cat/mopar/post/charger-gtx-super-bee-1971-1974-perfectfit-kit/

Well, I like the idea of a non-727 solution, especially one with a readily abundant replacement unit, but I don't see a lot of return on that investment. It's going to cost me $500 and an afternoon to go the 727 route, and this is the first 727 I've had go bad, and I would need five to go bad to make going the Chevy route cost effective.

Cool idea though.

If you've been happy till now without a OD just stay with the 727. My new cope trans + the gear vendor was about 4K. That included a core charge.

Well, I can be unhappy without O/D, or unhappy without thousands of dollars. I think I can live without the O/D more. :)

O/D ain't cheap. Maybe just rebuild & slightly uprgrade your 727B and think about a more "highway" rear end gear and/or taller rear tires?

pardon the ignorance, but what is the difference between an A, a B and an A-B??

Well I went the TCI route for the 6 speed auto. Holds about 700 tq and they take a GM 4L80E, chop off the bell housing and mate a bullet proof Reid AL bellhousing to it that bolts up to the Mopar engine. A little spendy but has the OD and can hold the hp to turn your street monster into a cruiser with good gas mileage for the long trips. I had to modify the tunnel, make a new tranny mount and shorten the driveshaft. Since I had my 69 Coronet all torn down, I just did the mods for this set up as I went. Has an electronic synchronizer so the speedo will hook up to modern gauges or a GPS set up. Will have it behind a 485ci(stroker383) and the TCI floor shifter plus the intercooler for the fluid. I have heard some things about the GV but no experience myself and decided to go this route to cure my OD issues that the OE 727 had.
