How big can I go????...........................

Well, as far as steel vs cast crank availability, apparently you can't go by the Mopar Engine Bible. A '75 Power Wagon with a steel crank, interesting. Maybe they had a pile of them waiting for "special" applications or warranty motors??

BTW, if I was building another low deck 451, I'd probably go with an aftermarket kit not a cut down stock crank, (for cost and compatibility reasons) & a well qualified builder.

440source.com has a ton of stroker kits and some history to read up on the mopar big blocks. Powernationtv.com even did a build with one of their kits.

Not all and I doubt very many. I have pulled several motor home 440s with cast cranks. I've also pulled a few motorhome 360 mills. They of course were ALL cast crank engines.
You're right on the stick thing ,forgot about that, even seen 400 steelies with a stick. Had 3 motor home 440s, all where steel, one was even a 1978, no rhyme or reason, something new learned everyday

Doctor diff told me 8.75 is good to around 600ish hp

Will be posting this to my build post soon. Have a 400 stroked, dynoed etc. My friend who build the rear and tranny said "8 3/4 is good for 600 or so but it also depends on good quality parts as well". This is the same guy who has been a Chrysler mech at the same old dealership for 35 years and built his own from the ground up a NHRA sanctioned drag car. So then I had to call Cass on a question about the disc conversion I got from him and he said what 1967coronet440 just posted as well.

After 73 the motor homes still had steel cranks, right till 78
This is not true. After '73, 440s that came with forged cranks were those in front of manual transmissions. There may be a very few exceptions but I've never seen one.

And still use the 3:23 Sure grip in my 72RR? Dropping a 400 back in it and want neighborhood of 350 to 400 hp. I don't want to overdo it (is that really possible). not sure if the stock rear would hold up to a 451 stroker or not. Any feedback? if no the somewhere in neighborhood of like I said, 350 to 400 hp.
Good grief. If all you want is 350 HP you don't even have to raise the compression on a stock stroke 400.

Budget and mopar doesn't compute!

Rats, where is my brain? This is true. Many motorhomes came with the heavy duty 6-pack style rods and this required the forged steel cranks.

I think with a stock stroke 400 with stock shot peened rods. good rod bolts, pocket ported 906, 915, 942 or aftermarket alum heads, with the CORRECT cam (not just recommended by the cam co. tech line person), good intake(lots of opinions out there), 750 - 800 carb, sound electronic ignition, 400 HP is more than doable. Keep the RPM down 6000 ish, & it will live fine. The 8 3/4 is easily good for 400 HP if properly set up & good gears. Same for a moderate 451 stroker ( same as came behind 440's).

I just picked up a 8 3/4 from a 68 b body to put in my 62 dart, it's a beautiful piece with the Mopar Performance truss welded on and straight as a die. Came with a real clean 742 pot less the saddles for 350.00 Canadian. a set of Mark Williams saddles and I should be good for 450+. Way more than I expecting first go round

Thanks For all the great advice. I know I could get more out of the motor, but I want something that I can cruise in, go cross country, hit rod/drag race her a little on Friday and Saturday night. So 400ish hp is what I'm looking for.
