Restoring Your Own Dash

Dug it out of the garbage like my parents did my bed in the 80s

You are welcome to it but it doesn't work for crap

I actually had pretty good results with spaz stix recently on my 65 Bezel. Yeah it is not Chrome,but.. to those who look at your dash, most people would not notice the difference. I was after a nice clean up, since it looked like **** to begin with. I not doing a reference resto, so I would rather spend the crazy money somewhere else.

It always just came out too silver for me so I bought a new bezel.

Chrome on top, spaz sample on bottom

I spent the money on spaz stix and literally just threw that and 4 other cans of spray chrome away just last night as I cleared out my paint cabinet to make way for **** that actually works.

I tried it with and without the black base coat and I tried to polish it... all the crap I seen on YouTube etc etc.

Wasted good money and even more time waiting for the crap in the mail. Matter of fact the can is still in the bottom of my garage garbage and you are welcome to it.

Thanks, this is what the post is for.

Any particulars on what you guys use for masking? Especially the narrow areas.
I used 1/8 inch pinstriping to define the curves, followed up with 3/4, then 2 inch. Then I meticulously used an x-acto knife to fine tune. I must admit, it was a lot of dicking around, but I have more time than money these days! Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Hope I answered your question. Thunder

I failed to explain on the first pic the yellow color you see is the raw plastic .... the first area painted was a dull silver.... then on to the outer perimeter and center area shiny black, then the imitation chrome paint.

It looks like you painted the black also. Is so what did you use ?
I just left the black shiny base coat for the Spaz Stix in the center. It may not be correct. I think it should be duller, but to re shoot that area at the end of everything, would be to risky and possibly screw up the all the imitation chrome work done prior. You have to follow a sequence all the way through. Plenty of time invested. I enjoyed the challenge! Some of my picky car buddies have seen it , and were very pleased. Again.... it's not chome, but ??? Thunder

Yes sir...sure did, and thank you. Just like I figured, though the panel I'm fooling with has one spot 1/16" narrow. Fun stuff! Like you, have more time, than money, but think I've got it worried.
I have a spare panel, that I used as a mule, but the masking I tried messed up the first attempt to paint chrome. So, on to the other, using a different method. Using Rustoleum metalized chrome paint, that seems it will hold up fairly good. But, needs 3-4 days to fully cure.
Which dull silver did you use, if I can ask? Mine's a 64 panel.

To be honest with you I had some old cans on the shelf, and what ever looked close on my test mule is what I used. Trial and error. I was going for like an aluminum look. Sorry cannot be more definitive.

Thanks everyone for your responses so far. Anyone one else ?
