The 49 year old factory AVS may not be down for breakfast

Well, I got some time to play with the carb a bit, put it back on & now it seems to be running pretty good. Being able to get at the mixture screws is a good thing.

Yeah getting to those sealed up idle mix can really help,BUT even tho they don't like dirt at all I think I'm going with Holley next time,,so much easier to tune for anything you want to do. When drag racing I was going with a super retarded(?) acc.pump cam because of a 4000rpm stall converter, I didn't need a full flow of gas at off-idle. Holley's are just so much easier most of the time. I NEVER went with a dbl-pumper, didn't need it.

I have found that the AVS & AFB carter's have leakage issues at the throttle shaft bores..

Along with Q-Jets, Holley's and AutoLite's leaking at the throttle shafts, after about 100,000 miles.

edit: They can be bronze bushed, for a price.

yeah most of the " deals " and sales of used carbs ive found over the years 80% of the quadrajunks and the holleys all had worn shafts.
surprisingly, the newer edelbrocks seem to have this same affliction...

the factory probably never imagined we would still be going on our original castings so longevity wasnt really a factor back then,
but the new edelbrocks, whats their excuse?

related thought,
i was reading about mp valve covers defects in the castings today...
theres just no pride in anything anymore.

all types of carbs will pass fuel past the throttle shafts if there is excessive fuel laying on the throttle blades. fuel boiling in the bowls is enough to push some gasoline thru the boosters. there's a whole lot more to this than the brand of carb.

The reference of worn throttle shafts is not as a fuel leak, but as a vacuum leak that you just can't seem to find. At least Holley started selling replacement baseplates, if they still are doing that.
Fuel boiling is a different issue due to crap gasoline, a heat spacer often helps that problem.
