Stuck torsion bar

im rebuilding the front suspension on my 65 coronet and i cant seem to get the torsion bar out on the passenger side (havent tried drivers side yet). I have tried everything and it wont budge. I dont care if i damage them as they will be replaced. Any suggestions?
 
Have you fully loosened the adjusters? Also may help to break the lower ball joint loose
if you don't care about damage a pair visegrips and a big hammer should do it

I only found one snap ring. Is there another somewhere? The service manual also only shows one. The adjuster has been removed and the ball joint has been broken free so there should be nothing keeping the torsion bar in there.

Except 50 years of corrosion, get the vice grips and BFH out
 
make sure that the lca bushing nut is backed off . it can keep a bind on the t bar . that tool that was shown . is what i've built or two short angle iron pieces clamped with vise grips up against the hex in front of the trans cross member . and a large hammer . don't forget to lube it well . all around the hex in the cross member .
 
I unbolted the 4 15/16 bolts holding the K member to the. Body with a floor jack under the k member keeping it close to the frame. I then rolled the jack foward on its casters. The torsion bars just fell out.
 
Cut in half , sounds like maybe body is twisted a little putting the bars in a bind.
 
I guess I was lucky on my drivers side. Did all that everyone mentioned. Clamped on 2 vise grips side by side and was able to pound it out fairly easily. Haven't gotten to the passenger side yet.
 
I just replace my torsion bars with larger new ones, I used
a grinder to cut them in half and then just pulled them out. I'm sure a sawzall will work to

I cut the torsion-bars outta all my projects with a sawzall. Never been an issue.
 
Mine practically fell out with a set of vise grips and one hammer tap. If you're sure you have all the load off of them & the car is supported, I guess you could also take a long 1/2" extension, iron bar or piece of pipe and give it a "love tap" from behind using your extension/bar/pipe sort of like a punch. It's just a little stuck I suppose.
 
Please remember slow speed on a sawzall with that kind of metal or ur gonna go thru saw blades like crazy.
 
Here's my shade-tree mechanic created tool to get them out and not damage the torsion bars . . .

Cut some grooves in a couple of pieces of 2x4 pine . . .
cut them a little under sized to make sure there was pressure on the bars when clamped . . .

Clamped them together on the torsion bar . . . and now have a surface to strike . . .

Passenger side came out easy - driver side took about an hour . . .

No damage to the torsion bars . . .

But the blocks of wood didn't hold up so well in the process - but they saved the torsion bars . . .

I tried that several time but kept on breaking the pieces of wood. My torsion bars look a lot rustier than yours. Didnt get a chance to work on the car today, il try cutting it in half tomorrow.
