my 440 seems to be eating coils 2 one replaced took distributor cap . Put new carb. On it backfires . Check timing ok and coils gone happened twice. Took cap off I have electronic ignition rotor seems to be rubbing metal brass contacts on cap . Wondering if I need new distributor .

Are you using a coil that requires the use of a ballast resistor, and are you using a ballast resistor?
The Rotor should not rub the cap.

Yes I'm using a ballast resistor the ballast resistor and all other electrical parts were change two years ago we replaced carb last week still all dialed in and timed .start running shitty high speed the backfiring coil was junk replaced it car ran fine went for a ride yesterday same thing took cap off found a little metal shavings in cap .

I'm thinking distributor but I don't no how much play it suppose to have right now u can move shaft about 1/8 inch

retracting my post. You answered my question in your last post. Was going to ask you about the shaft, whether it wobbles or not.

You might want to check that ballast resistor. I'm no electronics expert, but I do know that if the resistor fails it will take out the coil in a short time by putting a full 12v to it.

Well factory slop on shaft was about .000-.003", you got .125"
