So I took my heads out of the box just to admire them and check plug clearence on my headers. Set my shafts and rockers on just to get a pic & noticed the 2nd & 4th holdowns are huge!!!! They overlap the rocker arms, are these for an LA or is it typical to have them machined?
Also if anyone has a set I would appreciate a measurement!
Thanks

I don't know if it's typical of Hughes hold downs, but #2 & #4 on stock hold downs are much larger than #1, #3 & #5.

All I can say is that on my iron heads I had to grind away part of the rocker pedestals, grind the stock hold downs & use some Hughes rocker spacers to get my Isky adjustable rockers to line up over the valve stems.....so, "maybe" they're supposed to be that way? I'm sure there's someone else on this board with more/better info.

Those two hold downs are bigger than the other 3 but not sure if what you have is for a different application. the rollers seem to be over the valve stems in the picture though. I can't see the overlap in the picture on my screen you mentioned.

Ive been digging around on the web and it sounds like others have had this issue where machining is required.
I found this pic and though it is not mine, it is very close to my situation...

Not familiar with them but they are very tall....Have you asked Hughes?

Not yet but will try to give them a call. Thanks

I've built two BB with Hughes valvetrain parts. Both fit like a glove, NO machining required on mine. I personally really LIKE the Hughes setup. Just requires some patience to get everything shimmed to the proper tolerances and alignment.

I have them on my 440 using Crane Ductile arms with springs instead of shims and I had to remove a little material to center the tips over the valves.

I have the Hughes setup on my 440..I would've preferred the hold downs be intentionally undersized to allow for shifting/shimming without having to file/machine the individual hold downs.
Major PIA if you are not an engine shop/regular builder.

Im wondering if it would be essier to go with the billet aluminum ones and shim/space accordingly??? They look like they are all the same size...
