After I got the Charger running last winter, the carb was screwed up & when I shut it off, it did the biggest backfire I've ever had. Here are the results....

$225 bucks later and I'm back in business.

lol had one of those too,ik what you mean by a serious wtf moment too.

when we were coming back from watertown,on 90 the ramcharger shuts off at around 65mph....
i looked over at my buddy and said,is it running??
and then pumped the gas a few times...
we started slowing down,im in the fast lane and 2 cars come up in the slow lane at speed.
we go under this bridge the ram suddenly comes Back to life and Blows the muffler to Bits in an Enormous fireball,
( i may,erm,have pumped the gas a bit too enthusiastically  )
the 2 cars both Jam on their brakes and we continue onwards and back up to speed at 70 mph....:steering:

So thats the noise I heard the other day in Texas....Everyone was asking what that was....

A friend of mine used to do that in the 80's....exhaust backfires at bus stops while cruising past. Funny at the time, but did a heap of damage to his exhaust.

that was loud i bet ..i used to have a chebby pick up i would roll the key back for a couple of seconds the turn the key back on it would go off like a bomb and it would scare the hell out of people on the side walk on miami beach it was great fun !

The same thing happened to me in 1989 driving from Houston up thru Dallas on I-45.
1971 New Yorker 440 towing my 68' Charger. I accelerated to 75, then had to back off quickly due to a guy cutting me off. The backfire was horrendous! I had to drive 600 miles without a Muffler! The noise was deafening to say the least. The hardest part was whenever a cop was nearby, I had to coast! long drive it was. Oh the good ole days!

That's nothing. You should see my expanded toilet bowl after I let out a good one recently

maybe you could get a discount from the local water/sewer company?
reverse osmosis?HAHA

OUCH!! If it did both must have been a carb problem? Remember that happened to a guy at a NeHOA meet.

No, it comes from the having the throttle to the floor demanding fuel, then abruptly shutting down. The distributer timing doesn't react as fast.

RC if you want flames coming out exhaust pipes you mount spark plugs and gas supply on the tailpipes not before the mufflers!

Lol...been there done that myself!! I had a 1980 Dodge Power Wagon, built 360 with an Edelebrock 625(?) and headers and a 435 4 speed....when I originally bought it, it was running a full exhaust all the way to the back with Cherry Bomb mufflers. My one neighbour was bitching about how loud it was when I went to work at 5 am, so I eventually changed them out to I think some Thrush mufflers...try to tame it down in the mornings as far as noise. I had an electrical harness go bad on me that was in the steering column that would shut the truck off with no warning, and at the time, I did not know it was related to this harness...need less to say, after grenading two brand new mufflers, a friend of mine was able to lead me in the right direction with what I NEEDED to replace to fix it! Without him....I would have been chasing my tail and been swapping out everything!

Sorta related to mufflers...first car, '75 Ford Maverick ( ya ya...I know...but hey...it was only $100.00 bucks - 302 two barrel with an auto). The muffler rotted off one day, so I had this bright idea to put duals on it....so in total redneck fashion, I removed what was left of the factory exhaust and bolted two (Thrush?) mufflers on. I cut the pipes just before they split into the "Y". and had the mufflers RIGHT under the driver/passenger floorboards...yup....she was freaking LOUD!!! I come out of Calgary heading back home to Cochrane, but I had to go through a construction site where I dragged the low hanging mufflers, in the back of my head, I was thinking I should pull over and check/tighten them.....but no....should be fine. As I bring the car up to speed...I hear the muffler drop down and start dragging...I hit my signal and was just pulling over to deal with it when it fell off! It bounces under the car and comes out behind me...hitting the front bumper of a mini van that was also getting up to speed! But wait....there is more!!! The mufflers bounces off the van and INTO the opposite lane...where a newer (late '80's Vette?) is travelling...striking the car right in the fender...BUSTING the fiberglass and making a rather ugly, jagged hole! The lady who was driving pulls over and watches as I go grab my muffler laying in the middle of the road....no gloves....and nice and warm! I scream out a long list of curses as I rifle the muffler at MY car.....in a province known for farm trucks running all over...WHY did I have to hit a Vette?? She walks up to see me shaking in anger as I kick the quarter panel and asks if I AM OKAY??? She was more concerned about my mental state than her Vette which was insured and could be fixed....no exchange of info, she would let her insurance company deal with it...which was fine with me....16 years old with a $100 beater, she probably knew that I was not exactly rolling in dough!

This was a really bad backfire too!
