Carter AFB vs. Edelbrock

What is the difference between these two ? They're both copies of the same carb, but i primarily see Moparians using the Carter. Does it offer something over the Edelbrock version ?

A Carter Competition series came on my car, but it seems to not be running correctly with it. (new to me car) and a buddy lent me his Edelbrock 1405 to try in the meantime. The only thing i've noticed is a difference in throttle linkage bits. Wasn't the same and i had to fab up a bracket to make things work.

One better than the other ?
 
Carter carbs are old. Company was bought by (Edelbrock?). Edelbrock at least owns the or whatever legal means to build those carbs. They are essentially the same for the most part. OEM Carter carbs, especially older ones, do differ some.
 
For all intents and purposes, the Performer series is the old Carter AFB and the Thunder AVS is the old Carter AVS.
In fact, the Edelbrock Performer 1407 I have right now is a dead ringer for the old '67 440 Carter factory carb.
 
i don't think edelbrock owns what we think of as carter carbs. carter carbs were bought and sold several times and I believe an Italian company based in he u.s. makes them for edelbrock. the basic design in all of them is the same. the edelbrock avs is more like the mid '70's chevy avs than the Chrysler avs. there's a lot of common parts on all of them.

Doesn't Weber make the carbs for Edelbrock?
 
the carters used to have "weber" on them but there's another italian company (maybe a weber subsidiary,...?) in north carolina (?) making them now,....magnneti marelli? could be wrong but sure edelbrock nor holley makes them. i think carter sold to federal mogul back in the '70's and there's probably been changes since then.

When Carter went out of biz around 1984-ish, Federal Mougal acquired the rights to make the AFB and replacement parts for the Carter line.

Edelbrock was next to pick it up the same way Fed-Mougal did.

Edelbrocks Thunder carb is an AVS top and AFB bottom. Edelbrock claims improved circuits in the carb. IDK, I never cut one up. (Yet)

The AFB has many versions. Big and small carb neck, weighted secondary doors are NOT on all AFB carbs!!!!
4xx cfm to 750 cfm. Fuel I met locations, etc....

Magneti Marelli isn't a subsidiary of Weber, rather the other way around. Magneti owns Weber, and Magneti itself is part of Fiat.
 
I was wondering if someone would mention the full circle.

Mopar Performance and Magneti-Morelli are now synonymous.

I didn't intend to connect the two in anyway shape or form. But I am glad you mentioned that and cleared it up.

These days, so many companies are owned by other companies that if you nabisco was the top parent company.... well. Why wouldn't I be surprised. LMAO!
 
I always liked the AVS better for tuning the secondary side with adjustable air valve, no parts to buy just adjust spring tension.
 
I have always wanted to find a way to monitor in real time, the opening of the secondaries. I am thinking of green, yellow, and red LED lights on the dash or some kind of gauge using a throttle position sensor on the secondary throttle shaft. The red light would be secondaries closed, yellow would be opening/partially open, and green would be fully open. Or the meter/gauge would be obvious with a needle and a graduated graph behind it like a fuel gauge. Maybe someday I will get around to making one up, might even find a limited market for such a thing.

I agree. Out of the box they should be pretty close. I have a Thunder Series 800cfm AVS on my 440 and a Performer 600cfm 1405 on my poly. Both were slapped on and ran without issue. Changing metering rods is a piece of cake. Both are Magneti marked and both require the Mopar linkage adaptor. Also, the AVS has dual fuel inlets.

I have an Edelbrock 1407 750cfm apart right now awaiting the correct parts (previous owner or someone totally screwed it all up inside) as well as a new 650cfm AVS Thunder sitting in the box.
Where do I find reference to Magnetti Morelli on either of them?
 
I like the thunder series AVS. I have two 800's on my hemi. They are very simple carbs and easily adjustable. I like the fact that you can change jets and rods without getting fuel all over the place. Try doing that with a Holley.

Can you see it behind the linkage on the carbs main body?
There is a "W" on the left and
Magnetti Morelli over each other that is more centered.
