As part of my major resto project I ordered new rubber for my '63 Fury and encountered some problems along the way with ill-fitting gaskets, seals, etc. The outfit I ordered them from has been very responsive to their credit; but a time wasting irritation considering the massive amount of things to work on as anyone who's done resto projects knows well. My latest encounter are the inner door seals. After installing I noted problems getting the doors to close tight and now today after starting to install the inner door panels you have to be Hercules to close them tight! It looks as though the new seals are a larger diameter than OEM. I've had these seals on the car for over a month hoping they'd take a set. No idea how much worse it would become with the panels in! Here are a couple photos; has anyone run into this problem and found any solutions or just go hunting for another outfit that has better seals? Here again, I'm put on hold and can't continue with more installs if needing to rip these off and reinstall...thx

Bend the flange in with a crescent wrench placed over the flange. When I was building mine I noticed the old rubber portion was torn. This was due to the fact that there was no clearance between the door and door jam. I had to cut a piece out of the door and reweld it for clearance. The entire inside of my doors are cut out so they are pretty flexible. Still we were able to get them to fit and close properly.

I got my seals and windlace from Joe Suchy, panels from Legendary for my 65 Bel. Everything fit pretty well except for the right door. To me it looked like the door panel was too long (wide). Took it to a trim shop and had them take about an 1/8" off the panel and it fit a lot better. I think they charged me $20, probably could have done it myself. The doors close fine, no wind noise.
 
had the same problem with mine let it sit in the sun with the doors shut it is starting to get better
 
Same with my 64 Savoy...............did everything In the book. Managed to get the P side door closed and locked. That was 4 years ago and have never opened it since. Drivers door has to be slammed really hard for it to close all the way. It has never loosened up for it to close correctly.
I did a 63 Polara triple black convertible 15 years ago and had to remove the wind lace for the doors to even come close to closing.
 
These seals are pricy and don't come close to fitting? The shop making this stuff should find an engineer who knows how to read a scale. Just think with the mfg technology we have today a seal that fit better could be made half a century ago?
 
It's been explained by the firm I purchased the door seals from that the mfg has had trouble maintaining the proper spec's for these seals; the photo shows the new one alongside my original taking a section of the old seal that was the least compressed. It should be immediately evident that the new seal is going to produce trouble; but I installed it on my car when everything was stripped out and left them on the car for over a month to hopefully take a set with forcing the doors closed when I wasn't working on the car. This did nada...when I installed the inner panels the seal pushed the rear panel out of its way. Installing the sill plates over the old seals were always a tight fit to begin with and impossible with the new ones as the plates have a groove for the seals to seat over them. I don't have to say how many things the seal provides functionally and ascetically like the doors aligning when closed much less the alignment of the inner door panels or being Hercules to shut the doors tight. Am I super pissed? How could any mfg that knows anything about the tolerances required sell this stuff and add...charge steeply for it??? I'm glad I didn't toss my old seals as one is back on the car now and need to do the other door as yet while I complete the new carpet install. Spec's? The new .800...old .650. Not a big variance? It is when you double it considering the seal at the front and rear of the doors...I'll be asking for my money back.

That's not even close. Even the material they use looks totally wrong. Which outfit are these from?
 
I'm told there is only one company that makes these seals but don't know the name as yet. I'm going to Iola meet tomorrow to see if I can find a vendor that's been there before selling these seals...taking a section of this one to compare..
 
Man, I guess I really lucked out! Found mine a dozen years ago, couple of college kids had 22 1/2' of NOS, for $100. Snagged it, real quick!

Don't know if it helps, but noticed that Classic Industries sells 'em, besides several other convertible top items, including tops. Believe me, I know your pain, trying to find decent parts!
 
I got mine from JustMopar who is a sponsor here. My doors are tough to close, but getting better with use. But look at DVW's post. You need to massage the flange for best fit. Some bending in or out and even some grinding for better clearance.
 
I'm having a tough time considering bending or grinding on my $30k resto to make seals fit decent. When I had the new set on had to really close doors hard that can't be good for them. In fact one of the latches got jazzed up so door won t close tight. I think the gear housing is bent creating some added slop. For now put old ones back on and will try to doll them up...
