Is it safety issue driving without disc brake "positioner" clips?

Just found that three of the four "positioners" (that is what the FSM calls them) on my 1972 SSP are rattling around loose on the caliper pins because a piece is broken off of them. What do they do exactly and what happens or (does not happen) if I drive around in this condition. I did find a disc brake hardware kit from Bill Rolik that looks like it contains what I would need. Thank you.

Anything happened yet? I have found no ill effects of running with broken ones.

Funny, that reminds me of a comment a relative asked after I installed a 24 hour monitored alarm system in a remote ranch house (with unsecured firearms) that was 5 miles from a state prison "never had a break-in before, so an alarm is not such a great idea". Those clips might just stop the rattles, don't know, that is why I was asking and I plan a long road trip soon.

no problem with not using positioners. When you buy new caliper pins now they tell you not to use them. I just converted to discs using 73 Cuda disc setup, works great, much better then the drum brakes. Brakes don't rattle or squeak.

From the diagram I posted above, I am thinking that these "positioners" help to even out the static gap (between the disc and pad) on each opposing ends when the brakes are not applied, keeping the pad from tilting one way or the other. If my guess is correct, I don't see anything wrong with using these clips for a little "fine-tuning" of the slop. But like I said, I am just guessing.

That is the purpose of the positioners (even out the gap). I've run them broken, off and on and no diff.

I updated to the newer pins years ago on my factory disc brake 71 Superbee

Those positioners or clips went in the garbage

In frame #7 above, Bee1971 said he replaced his caliper pins (upgraded style?) and trashed the positioner clips.

So long

Trying to refresh my memory

Didnt the factory oem brake caliper guide pins take a 3/8" socket ?

And the newer replacement caliper guide pins take a 1/2" socket and it tells you in the directions not to use the anti rattle/positioner clips
I cant even remember if the factory clips would fit on the new pins to bee honest with you ? Maybe that's why they got tossed

The replacement pins are too short for the clips to be utilized. If you do use the clips with the updated/shorter pins the brakes will work poorly due to the caliper sliding motion being inhibited on the shorter pin by the clip.

If you want to replace the clips let me know, i have a lightly used set on the shelf.
