I have a 73 Charger with a factory manual (hand crank) sunroof. When I try to open or close it seems to be slipping and doesn't want to move. It hasn't worked for as long as I've owned it (long time). I don't know if it is stretched springs or another issue. It doesn't look like it is a stripped gear on the hand crank.

Has anyone had a similar issue? Any idea where to start looking or where to find parts? I started to open up the track and there were springs (long cable looking) everywhere and didn't want to open up a can of worms.

Thanks!

It is probably the handle connection to gear there should be a screw holding it together.
If not are the cables moving? That would mean damaged ends to the roof.

Please get a body service manual for the proper procedures to work on the roof.
The gears are the same as a gm and Ford from the early 70s on an electric, your manual is probably the same as a Beatle since it also used the Golde system.
Here is link to service manual

By the way they are cables not springs.

I read on a forum somewhere a while back that Volkswagen sunroof parts were very interchangeable with Mopar sunroofs.
True or not, dunno. But they are readily available as I recall from the thread.

Yy1 has an entire roof assy in my opinion it's cheap. You might want to ask him he might take the needed parts out for you if you buy the whole thing! Good luck

There's also an insert addendum to the body manual.

Those pages are all posted on this site.

it's the most extensive collection of Mopar sun roof info anywhere on the web.

If you need assistance to rebuild your unit, send me a PM for more information

Thanks all. I appreciate the help!

I know this is old but if you didn't get this working I have a fix for you. I had the drive gear and cable guide plate machined from case hardened steel. Just got 6 sets made and I'm test fitting them into my car today. Here are a few pictures with the original for comparison. These are not the same as the VW parts. Not even close. Other parts like the cables and some seals are though.

If your selling those I would take a set.

Ok, You need the manual gears for a 74 b body. I have a complete shut roof restored for a 78 dodge magnum. The opening is not the same size but the remainder is the same. I Also have a 74 charger sun-roof car, but It's a complete car. Call me sometime, I can check with a friend if he has a spare set of gears. send pm again

I saw in a pass post you said you somewhere in Denver that could fix a power sunroof on a 72 Charger. Do you still have that information or is the place still even open. I can’t remember how long ago you posted that. And I see you’re from Aurora, I live down in Pueblo. Thank you for any information.

I have have some parts and a local friend who very good at restoring sun roofs. I will attempt to send a pm , but if you don't receive it send me one
