cranks up fine and runs, replaced alternator, replaced voltage regulator, and replaced wiring harness as well, battery has been fully charged, battery shows 12.6 before cranking, while running decrease to 12.4,does not increase while running for a longer period of time.have new dash guages,i even swapped out the ammeter guage with another guage to test it does the same thing,i added ground wire to new alternator the same way the old alternator was on fld bolt.any ideas out there,i removed dash to install new guages and add a tac it was working fine before that, does the two ammeter wires require a washer to be on nut and bolt? thanks

what altenator ( it could be a bad one) I just had that experience. is the altenator grounded? and what voltage regular? Ive seen the cheapies with a compute chip inside the metal housing..

napa rebuild 69 squareback, wells vr607 regulator,is grounded to case of alternator.

If you're confident all your wiring is correct, then you could full- field alternator to rule out it being defective, then replace regulator with known good one, if alt checks out good.

Charging voltage with no load should be about 13.5 to 14.8 volts. Sounds like you have a draw. If it was working before, then you need to re-trace your steps. Good luck!

Disconnect the battery and dig out the ohm meter. Everything will need to be disconnected that is not swiitched. ( clock, radio memory and such)
A new wire harness does not guarantee correctness.

found problem it was the old harness had fried the alternator connecting prong and i replaced it with new harness and new connectors and its is fine again.replaced alternator with tuff stuff 100 amp that has enough juice to compenstae for lower power idle problem that most of these factory alternators suffer from.

It sounds like an alternator I had a few years ago.....3 x bad diodes, and draining the battery. Toss it and get a new one.

Even with an 150 amp alternator I can watch my voltage (I'm running a voltmeter) slowly drop in stopped traffic when running the stereo and A/C. If I raise the idle 100 rpm the voltage starts climbing again, not an issue as long as your not idling forever but they do produce a lot less current at lower rpm's.
