Voltage regulators really have little to do with amperage and more to do with the state of voltage in the system. It does not carry high current or amperage. Being pretty much preset to attain around 13.5 volts, it causes the diodes to open and close increasing the amperage to the battery and thus voltage. Older cars sent most of this amperage through an amp gauge so the driver could see the state of the entire electrical system but when you go above about 50 amps it's best to charge directly to the battery. To feel secure you should look at high end cars that had obscene amounts of electrical equipment ( N Yokers, Imperials and such )and use one of their regulators, but most voltage regulators are the same. I personally prefer a new style alternator with a built in regulator because they are not only matched and more sensitive but if the fail you can change them in minutes and they are usually in the $24 dollar range.
