Spindle stuck to drum

Hi guys, converting drums to discs and the kit I have uses the original spindles. The problem I have is the spindles won't come off the drums. One has a nut I still need to remove but the other one has all nuts removed and it still won't budge. I've tried penetrating oil, heat, bfh but no luck. I have to be careful as I don't want to damage the spindles. Any ideas how to separate them? Cheers

You mean backing plates?
Of course, be sure the bolts/nuts are off. Could be they are just stuck, from age, rust.
Try some blocks of wood. Flip them over, putting the back of the backing plates on two wood blocks, high enough that the spindle clears the floor. Then, with another piece of wood, or aluminum drift, whack the end of the spindle. Don't go overboard on that. Should separate.
 
i had the same problem, hydraulic press, if you dont have one, find a local auto parts store, most of the time they have one in the back and if you ask nicely, they'll press it off for you for free.
 
Yup, had the same problem and had to take it to a truck repair shop down the road where they pressed it off. Once I got it back I had to use a die grinder to relieve the center hole so it wouldn't happen again. Never seen one stuck so tightly.
 
In the past I've used a big screwdriver, put the tip at the bottom edge of the spindle against the backing plate and tap it in with a hammer, the wedge action of the tip will usually pop it apart
 
Thanks for all the replies guys helps to know it's a common issue and nothing unusual, by spindle I mean spindle backing plates yes, isn't it all one assembly though? I'll try with the wood first and then the press, sometimes it's worth that $20 or whatever to save the five hours of hammering! The kit is one from PST that will allow 14" wheels to be used. Cheers
 
Back off the brake ajuster a bit. it will help
and if that doesn't help
go rent or buy a hydraulic drum puller,get a torch and a big f'n hammer.
there hasn't been one that i haven't gotten apart yet and
i have done about the worst
the last one i did
the brake linings pulled off the shoes and they stayed stuck on to the drum!

It's not the drum and not related to the brakes themselves - the drum came off ok, it's the spindle assembly or hub carrier attached to the brake backing plate.
 
so the hub is still stuck on to the spindle??
a drum puller and heat or a press should do the job..

i once had a hub stuck so bad that
i cut it thru in 2 places with a 4 inch cutoff wheel on a angle grinder
and i peeled it apart like a onion..
it laughed at the drum puller
you might have to go that route

Ohh, in that case disregard my post. In my case the drum was stuck to the hub. Had to remove the castle nut to get the drum off and the hub came with it. Sorry I misunderstood you.
 
My terminology might be a bit confusing...basically I need to be left with just these parts which are currently stuck to the back of the drum brake.

Let us know how your kit turns out. I used the Dr Diff kit and very happy with the brakes. I had a nightmare of bleeding issues, but otherwise happy with the results.

Will do, but at the speed of this restoration don't expect feedback this side of Christmas...when I see what some people achieve in a matter of months it amazes me. I'm 2.5 years in and the end seems as far away as ever. I'm restoring this car 15 minutes at a time between working full time and 3 young kids...

How come some folks give advice without reading the whole thread or even looking at the pictures? Yes, the terminology was a little off, but the pictures should have explained what the OP was trying to do...

getting the backing plates off should be a cakewalk
was assuming that it was something of more substance... opps my bad
 
It should be a cakewalk, that's why I was asking for advice. Technically there's nothing to stop them prising apart but they ain't shifting. I thought there might be some trick to getting them off and I have to be careful as I don't want to damage them. The only 2 ways I can see is either hitting a wedge between them from the back, or hitting the end of the spindle, but that seems fraught with risk (of bending the spindle).

Don't give up. Rome wasn't built in a day. Not everybody has the luxury of spending unlimited time on their hobbies.
I know exactly how you feel. I have a nice shop with hoist and everything else but was unable to find Time at all this summer to work on my Coronet. Too many repairs to other equipment and shortage of hands on deck.
I will pull it out of storage and wash it just to show I care still. By this winter it's going to spend two months occupying the hoist.
