No one ever oils the advance cam, and this is the results.

seems like i always have to take my distributors apart a re-lube the advance weights. what's a good lasting lube?
 
Lou,I have been using white Lithium for years and never had a problem,same with the breaker plate.

i've tried all kinds of stuff and the results seem to be the same; the grease dries up.
 
Oiling that little felt circle was standard at tune up time-every 12,000 miles in the old days. Checking both advance systems was also included.

Bingo oil the felt with a few drops of motor oil every 12k keeps it all lubed under the plate (weight, springs, shaft). A lot of us do not know that.
 
what's a good lasting lube?
Not sure what the name is, but on aircraft magnetos, a 'non-sling' type heavy grease/oil is used. It's like rear axle lube.
Every time I get into my distributors, I put a thin coat over the entire weight, besides at the pivot. Keeps the parts from rusting, beside lubing them, doesn't dry, stays put.
I'll try to get a name, since it's been around since before WW2. Might be hard to find these days!
 
Lubriplate? No idea, I use cam lube on the points cams and usually just spray the parts all fast with PB blaster to keep the rust down, seems they are lubed trough the cam plate with engine oil I can see it sling out when on the machine running them up. I just make sure the new felt is saturated pretty well not soaked.

No, not Lubriplate.
Did some quick looking. (I've always called it mag lube) There is a special mag grease, but that's for packing the bearings. Also list a breaker cam lube...probably the lube I have, and used to.
Best description is, a waxy heavy oil...dark, and only a thin coat used.

Some parts houses might carry, or can order, what they call breaker cam lube...but, not going to say it's the same.
 
I was a USAF aircraft guy, c-130's and HH-60 No magnetos though all turbines, not cosmoline by chance it is more for storage I would think but who knows.
 
Nope, not cosmoline...though it's great for 60 year old parts! (Hardens, and has to be cooked off.)

Round motor magneto stuff. Probably can't find what I'm thinking of, except maybe military surplus. Sorry. The little bottle I have will last my lifetime.
Best chance might be looking in a airplane supply house...probably not cheap.
Just tossing out, what I know actually works.

I have yet to find a felt pad in a reman distributor. Can you buy them new from someplace?
 
Interesting thread- I'd almost have to go with 'lubriplate' also, there's more than 1 type.
 
I KNOW I HAVE A 20302 READY TO GO. 150 AND THE RIDE?
